ND Filters - Soft/Hard/How many stops?

I am also interested in a variable GND filter, that I can change
the position of the ND line (moving up and down). Anyone knows a
source ?

If you mean just sliding the transition line or region up and down, than you can do that with most rectangular filters (Lee, Cokin, Singh-Ray, etc.) that fit in Cokin or Lee holders.

I looked into this a while ago (combining CPLs) to make a variable ND grad. There are some problems that can develop from trying this and if you search here you may find the old thread about it.

This may also produce soe strange patterns in the image. I think you can read about it at the SR site if I remember correctly.

I ended up buying the SR vari ND filter that goes from 2x to 8x (expensive, ouch!). I just haven't had a chance to use it yet, so I can't comment on how it works yet.

Quick question. When sliding the filters into the holder, does the part that slides in get slightly scratched? This is not visible from the lens, so I am assuming this may be normal.

Hoping for some info.
