Hi! Hoping to visit NZ from the UK in 2008 - yes, I plan ahread! ;-)

One-stop option is via Singapore. Just wondered what Singapore Canon prices are like, both at the airport and in the city, before I decide whether to get in and out as quickly as possible, or spend a few hours there. . . .

In my experience, tons of places to shop, but not likely to find a deal. Certainly not at the airport. Maybe better chance if you were with a local to bargin for you, but still not enough of a deal to make the hassles of international warranty worthwhile. Also the whole process of haggling like crazy, is not my bag, but if you get enjoyment that type of shopping process, you might get few hours of entertainment out of the shopping process.

There are very many reputable dealers i Singapore. Since competiton is so fierce, and if you are aware of what you should pay, then haggling is hardly an issue. You can expect to save 20-25% on (horrible) UK prices. You will also get a small tax refund (around 3%) on top of this at the airport when you leave.

Lucky plaza, Marina shopping center and Funan IT mall is a good place for shopping. I got my 1Dm2n and 16-35 there.

Aren't Air New Zealand flying to HK as well? I thought I saw an ad in the local paper for flights from HK-London using Air New Zealand so I assume they are flying to HK.

HK is another option for your photographic needs.

Using Singapore Airlines means single stop, London to Christchurch; using Air NZ means two stops.

I've lived in Singapore for cough years. Prices will be much lower than the UK or NZ - and the tax refund is now 5%.

Forget lucky plaza, you'll get skinned alive. Do your own bargaining, the sales dudes here all speak (reasonably) fluent english, something that can trip you up in hongkong.

Spend an afternoon, if you have it, in Sim Lim Square and/or Funan IT Mall. Ask around, and if someone gives you a sky-high price, or no price at all, just walk out - there's nothing like the competition of having 20-30 camera stores in one mall.

aND whoever suggest emailing MS-Colour for an e-quote, that's a damn fine suggestion, I've bought accessories before there and they are honorable and highly price competitive.

Finally... dress and act like a "local" caucasian - the salesguys can smell a touirist and will eat you for lunch. Long pants and the absence of a backpack/beltpack/passport hanging out of the pocket should do the trick.

Of course, that could all be different in 2 years, but whoi's to know...
