Hello All,

I have a D50 18-70mm , for nearly a year now and am very pleased with the results. I take mostly landscape pictures so the 18-70 is perfect however after using a friends 70-300mm nikon lens i really liked it, especially for taking pictures of people , would anyone recommend another lens, i think the vr lenses are out of my budget to be honest but maybe i could find a second hand one. Are the sigma lenses any good? i also want internal focusing, thanks for any advice.

a second question, is the 70-300mm g nikon lens much worse than the other type? and what does it mean it doesnt have any apeture rings??

Ben, I have the Sigma 100-300mm F4 lens and I have to say whilst a bit of a monster it's a fabulous lens, I tend to have it on the camera all the time regardless of weight. This lens may be out of budget, always worth searching for a secondhand one!, but I would rec'd you get a longer lens to go in your bag too, irrespective of type/quality...there's always processing to 'clean up' any shorfalls.

I had a G series Nikon 70-300mm and it was a little soft at wider aperatures, ok stopped down a little though, don't worry about the aperature ring scenario, your camera body will recognise and adjust accordingly!

If you're looking for a zoom that you can carry then how about a 28-300mm? The Tamron XR LD (older non Di) is a great performer for the price as is the newer Sigma DG. You have the wide end covered on the 18-70mm so an 18-200mm might be a bit redundant.
