Photography tips for Australia?

Thanks Ted for the info - will make notes of this. Why is the
Sydney aquarium not for photography?
you can take photos at the darling harbour (sydney) aquarium. i think he meant that there may not be anything too exciting to be photograph?! shooting photos at aquarium can be quite challenging and a different type of skill altogether. i haven't been too successful in this type of photography. some are good an others not (in this area). good luck.

You haven't missed much ; it is like a picnic site where you ocasionally see some native birds and the pletoria of Kangaroos ... Nothing exciting . You can have a barbeque there if that's your cup of tea ; but I wouldnt call it a "zoo".

A good zoo is weribee or Melbourne zoo. Haven't been to Sydney one...
Hi, Good point from the poster above. I haven't been to the
Healsville Sanctury but hear it is very good. It is situated in
the Yarra Valley where there are lots of wineries and lovely
countryside to see...........

"re: zoo to visit
If you want to see native flora and fauna
(with good close viewing of koala's, 'roos, native butterflys etc)
maybe try Healsville Sancturary"

And the Gold Coast, well... not my cup of tea. Its full of high
rises, built out, over touristic. If you're into theme parks go for
it. I just think Aus has more interesting and unique things for
your valuable time than theme parks available in the rest of the
world.
Mark,

I realize this but my daughter is 8 and we have no theme parks in India and she will probably have a blast for those days. Maybe we can cut it down to 5 days and increase Daintree.

For the Gold Coast area: Try the point at Burleigh Heads, it will
give you a fantastic view of the northern Gold Coast beaches as
well as an opportunity for some surfing shots. Around dusk,
thousands of Lorikeets congregate in the trees below the point.
For the southern GC try Snapper Rocks, Point Danger, Kirra or the
hill at Greenmount (All within 3km). All sites stick out as small
points and allow good elevated shots from the water back toward the
beach and are adjacent to famous surfing beaches.
For something a little different try the hinterland views from
Springbrook or Mount Tambourine (About 40mins drive). For some
fauna try Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and feed some Lorikeets.

Enjoy
Thanks,

I'm writing down all this to follow up on.

RE: The Geat Ocean Road, depending on how far down you're going there's a great mini National Park just past Peterborough called Tower Hill. There are so many koalas here you'll probably trip over one.

And venomous snakes too!

It's pretty small and self-contained; there are three or four walks and all of them are relatively short. It's magic.

RE: Melbourne Zoo, it's pretty good - small enough that you can cover it all fairly easily as well. Healesville sanctuary is great, but a bit of a drive (through beautiful wine country) out of the city.

Oh, and when you're on the Great Ocean Road past the 12 (now 7(?)) Apostles, take EVERY left turn-off you see; some of them lead to amazing bays.

A must see are the twelve apostles, best seen with blue sky's. The Melbourne Zoo is very nice, my favorite spot.

The Northern Territory is amazing; I drove up from Uluru to Drawin last year, and it's worth a trip on its own.

From walking through rocks as big as city blocks, to hand-feeding whistling kite's as they hover in mid-air over the Arafura Sea... Amazing.

Hmm ... just a quick note ... there are some restrictions now in terms of taking pictures in city places, such as:
1. Southgate
2. Shrine's of Remembrance.

I think there are several others places that are banned as well, like QV building, Melbourne Central (but I'm not too sure on this; I only saw in some instances people took pictures in both buildings, and security guard come and tell them off.

Dockland is a must.
And yes, Sofitel Hotel, with its Toilet View of City Skape is a must. hehe :D

I have only have some pictures on my gallery ... perhaps this one is the recently added one (of Dockland - Bolte Bridge).

I think other's have pretty much suggest you many places ...

You'll have fun here :)
Thanks for the info antidote. You have a lovely Melbourne gallery
and I loved the toilet with a view . Will make notes of all your
suggestions

there was a big hoohaa about this one. you should still have the right to shoot the city view from southbank. just don't shoot whilst you are inside the complex.

besides you can always use the "i'm a tourist and didn't know the rules" line. :)
2. Shrine's of Remembrance.
are you sure about this one sid? i was there only a couple of months ago and had no problems shooting within the shrine and outside of the grounds as well. it may have changed since (sigh).

Ah, I assumed you were from USA. In that case, do the theme park thing.

Dont get me wrong, I like Brisbane, but if you're going to Melbourne AND Sydney, going to Australian 3rd city (Brisbane) wont give you much more.

Use your valuable time and money and do something unique to Australia, Id suggest going to the Centre, Uluru (Ayres Rock)

Photographically, you will be in heaven :)

You can get a great shot of the bridge and opera house together from an area called 'Mrs Macquaries Chair'.

Otherwise, around Circular Quay and also from the bottom corner of the harbour bridge going towards The Rocks area. In fact you should also visit The Rocks. Actually nother -GREAT- place is near the Cruise Bar at the ship terminal at the Rocks. You'll get fantastic shots of the Opera House and Sydney's buildings as well and can walk around and get heaps of nice shots.

In fact, you should also visit The Rocks.

Manly Aquarium is a good one. (Manly is a suburb)

As for the blue mountains, there is a sky view place there where you can get go down into the mountains and also go across it on one of those carriages on a tightrope.

I took bucket loads of pictures at the shrine a few months ago without problems...

Anytime of year in Queensland is good for polarized skies (^ ^)

The weather in Melbourne is another story . . . as they say "four seasons in one day".

I see you're a bird-lover so maybe you'd enjoy the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary on the Gold Coast. At feeding time you'll have a hard time dodging Rainbow Lorikeets. Count the kids afterwards to check that none have been carried off in the frenzy (^ )

Yes, the Gold Coast is basically a tourist trap now crowded with apartments and gift shops but the beaches are still fairly nice. The southern end is a little less spoilt so maybe a trip to the bird sanctuary and the beaches nearby are a good bet. A drive into the mountains is a good way to escape the craziness.

If your heading to Lamington National Park I can recommend O'Reilly's guesthouse. They have wildlife spotting tours and bushwalks. Lots of great photographic potential but some of the walks can be quite demanding.

About Brisbane: it's not the most exciting city on the planet but it has a more relaxed atmosphere than Sydney and Melbourne. The best thing is relaxing at a cafe or restaurant by the river in the evening and not paying exorbitant prices! Try New Farm for good restaurants and a CityCat ferry in the evening for the city lights and views of the Storey Bridge.

Have fun!
