Hey,

Do you or anyone you know, know of any photography schools in Vancouver, BC?

I'm looking for a photography school that offers diploma courses. So far, I know FocalPoint on West 10th Ave.

I also heard of Vancouver Photo Workshops. But, just like their name says... it's mostly workshops or courses... they do not have diploma programs.

Please advise me.

Thank you very much!

There is also a program at the Emily Carr School on Granville island and a good program run by former Focal Point faculty at a small college claled Langara College. I would definitely check them out.

Just talking about this on Wed. and Langara was brought up in the conversation with high regards. Haven't looked at it myself yet but...

What if the Hoky-Poky really was what it's all about?

thanks guys...

here's the difference so far...

emily carr takes 4 years;
langara takes 2 years;
focal point takes 10 months;

when calculated... they pretty much cost the same amount of money

plus the thing that i don't understand about langara is... you need to be a member of a camera "photography" club for AT LEAST two years...

imo... the reason why i'm going to school is to learn properly... why do i need to be in a camera club? why would i join a club if i don't know what i'm doing? if i know what i'm doing, why would i go to school and spend $15k on it?

what do you think?

i'm going to school so I know what the heck I need to do. My plan is get a diploma and start my own business - i hope. I do not have any kind of influence around me to help me learn photography on my own. that's why i need to go to school, get properly trained and get ready for the real world...

There is also VanArts (Vancouver Institute of Media Arts) who have, among other offerings, a 12 month program in digital photography. They have a substantial business component as part of their curriculum, which is good if you're planning to go pro.

Thanks for the info on this. I don't want a diploma or anything but would like to take some photography courses. I live in d/t Vancouver although currently backpacking in Jordan.

Again, thanks for the info, now I will have somewhere to start with my new DSLR when I get it (still deciding on which one)

I'm an instructor for the Langara College Professional Photo-Imaging Program and I can guarantee there is no requirement for camera club membership. We admit students based on academic pre-requisites and interview. Keep in mind that there are 2 programs; I'm speaking for the full time daytime Diploma course, designed to start a career in the photographic industry. There is also a Continuing Studies night class program, which is a more student driven Certificate program.

Here's the college program website http://www.langara.bc.ca/programs-and-courses/programs/photo-imaging/program-curriculum.html
