Hello,

I am trying to figure out how to cut round corners on wallet-sized prints.

I would assume maybe it is some type of punch or sheer?

What is this tool called, where would I get it, and any rough cost estimates?

Thanks,
Alex

Four main choices. below in order of cost:

1. Pro Lab does it for you. Usually costs a few extra cents per unit depending on lab and sometimes not available for lower level volume jobs like sports or school photos.

2. Corner Rounder by Lassco ($150.) Rounds corners ONLY, ONE corner at a time, and you must tim to size first. Made for doing ID cards, will work for photo wallets - but is a real pain for any volume at all. See online at:

http://www.factory-express.com/Paper_Cutters/Cornerounders/lassco20cornerounder/lassco20cornerounder.html

3. Dedicated Single Cut Wallet Size Die Cutter Punch ($200-450) Cuts one wallet at a time with singe stroke of arm. Be sure you buy one that fits the format of your wallets as some have openings on 3 sides and some only have a top/bottom opening and work only with 3-1/2" roll paper. See online at: http://www.photodiecutters.com/

4. iMark (or similar) Rotary Bulk (8x or 16x) Wallet Die Cutter ($1000-5000) Cuts an entire page of wallets at once using a special die and carrier. Electric models available ($$$$) for high volume or lab production. By far the faster and easiest of all cutters, but most pricey. The electric models used in labs are very sweet to use, but big bucks.

I believe my wife has one. She is a consultant for Creative Memories. I will ask her tonight and see what is available and do some testing for you.

Stay tuned....

The only thing about the Creative Memories option is that you must remember they make products designed for HOBBY scrapbookers, and not pro photographers who could be doing heavy volumes of work, so ergonomics or durability could be an issue under constant heavy use...

Not a slam against CM stuff at all, but we have also done photo buttons in our biz and found both thier old and new style circle cutters to be far less tolerable in use than the other brand and style heavy duty photo cutters we now use. The price difference was huge, but the heavier duty models dont wear out our arms or hands, and allow much quicker production, so they paid for themselves pretty quick.

You can pick up used Lassco brand corner rounders on ebay for as little as 50 dollars with luck, and real single wallet die cutters for 150 bucks.

CRitchie,

This would be great. I don't plan to do high volumes, just maybe a couple hundred wallets. I would appreciate any info.

Thanks,
Alex

Alex,

I checked with my wife. This rounder is the only size they make. After cutting the four corners I placed them back together to make a small square and a dime fit just perfectly in the left over hole.

So the radius is about the size of a dime. It really didn't take too much off and it left a very nice edge and looked very professional.

Let me know if you need any more info.

Thanks for the info CRitchie,

This is a little larger cut than I had originally hoped for, but maybe I'll pick one up and give it a try. :o)

Thanks,
Alex
