FWIW: 400D rumor/leak from Australia

I believe the 400d info is false.

Canon have as far as I know never upgraded low end DSLR sensor MP before high end.

Because of this I expect the 400d to use the same 8Mp sensor as the 350d. I expect something similar to the 20d -> 30d update. A few new SW features, a larger 2.5" screen (probably low res to kepp the price dow) and a reworked bodey (with better grip).

The price will be similar, perhaps cheaper than the 350d. It will thereby be substantially cheaper than the Sony A100/Nikon d80, and Canon will still have the edge in iso performance.

Regards Mats

Or we will be surprised other way. Well, although I agree that we wil probably only see 350D update, and in such a case, they can't go against 30D, but what if 30D was just meant to be a slight update before something really new is coming?

So if 30D would be upgraded, then even 350D could be upgraded (mp wise)

400D must have more MP so it can compete with other brands.

If canon release a 400D for instance, will it still have the same plasticy, toy like feel to it? Probably which is why I'd prefer to go the 30d successor route - though when that will be is anyone's guess.

Don't get me wrong, I love my 350d and I put up with the poor build through the images it allows me to take, but after having played about with my friends D200, I can't help but feel the way I do now!

That's what I think will happen too. The 350 replacement can't have 10MP if the 30D only has 8. The 30D needs upgrading since the DSLR competitors are at 10MP now. Canon can't sit tight at 8MP for all their cameras just to keep their lineup hierarchy intact.

35D with 10MP and some extra features not seen previously on Canons.

380D with 8MP or 10MP with better grip and 2.5" screen. Maybe a couple surprise features too.

Canon is by far the marketshare leader. I expect they know they need to keep up in the megapixel race and add features now that Sony is in the game. And, Nikon's D70s replacement was expected. My guess is Canon's profits are largely from the 350 and 30D. We'll see new models before Photokina, almost certainly on Aug 24.

Also, if you use EOS D2000, RAW images should be converted in advance using CR2 Converter for Windows.

CR2 Converter for Windows converts RAW images taken by EOS D2000 into RAW images with CR2 extensions so that they can be displayed/edited in Digital Photo Professional 2.1.

CR2 Converter for Windows is only available in English. You can download and install CR2 Converter for Windows in the same way as Digital Photo Professional 2.1 Updater for Windows.

To start the CR2 Converter for Windows, open the [Canon] folder under the [Program Files] in the startup drive. Then double-click [omce.exe] in the [CR2 Converter] folder

Ok ..... The D2000 is the same as the Kodak DCS520, one of the first DSLR.

...that the 30D was a more temporary replacement than previous cameras in its line, and that it would be updated within the same year as it was released. This will be interesting.

On the other hand, the reason that people buy the 20D/30D in preference to the 350D is related to features and not image quality. If the 350D does get replaced with a camera that has a 10MP sensor, that probably wouldn't be a huge problem for sales of the 20D/30D, though you probably would get less beginners buying them.
If thats the case, then a new 30D would have to go to at least 10MP
too. In the short run, if there is no 30D replacement, it would
affect 30D sales to potential first time buyers.

Used to own the 300D/Digital Rebel, went back to Nikon via the D50 rather than the 350D/XT last year.

Even so, I would like to know what's going on this new model if the rumours are true. I'd like to know:

Compact Flash/Secure Digital? While I love my Nikon D50, and the new D80 intrigues me, I kind of find this whole rush to SD irritating, especially in the SLR realm.

Size: I found the 350D/XT much too small, particularly in the grip area. Would really be interested to see if the 400D has a size more like the D50/D80 (which I find about perfect)

Status Panel. Another reason I didn't like the 350D/XT was that they moved control of many parameters from the status panel to the LCD monitor. And of course the new Sony A100 and the Olympus models do away with the status panel altogether. If the new Canon does like either the 350D/XT or the Sony/Olympus models, that would totally disqualify it for me on the spot.

Nothing new ever got reported above and beyond the original claimed inside information. Just a lot of back and forth banter.

Well, we'll know for sure within a few weeks, probably by the end of the month.

nothing more than the usual..

sorting through all I have heard and seen, my take on the 400D (sic):

still 8mp .. does the job, and reviews of the new S and N bodies suggest that they do not significantly improve on the current 350D for quality or noise..

still 7-point AF - have to differentiate from the bigger brother.. remember this is an entry level body..

still a 'smaller' body - again, this appeals to consumers moving to SLR from p&s.. as well as pros looking for an 'emergency backup' with good IQ.. but the form will be changed somewhat to address the complaints about the handgrip.

'shooting priority' - half press of the shutter saves the new settings just like the original 300D

larger and brighter review screen/LCD - with higher resolution - say 2.5" 235000pixels.. maybe doing away with the mono LCD portion in favour of the top portion of the LCD doing the same job..

more buttons.. and more 'features' that have little to do with the act of taking photographs.. voice clips, direct print options, time and date stamp (remember those?).

scene modes, same as the bigger brothers - for more commonality..

even taller built-in flash - but no increase in power output..

still staying with CF and the current small battery..

may I be excused, my brain is empty
Cheers,
Scotty

I really doubt it, I think canon is content to spend a year before
a major upgrade.
And when was the last major upgrade? Here is a list of the last upgrades, mixing the various lines together. It looks to me like it has been over a year since the last major upgrade. Some may argue that the 30D release was a major upgrade. It has also been discussed here that it was meant as an interim release. I'm still waiting for a majore upgrade from the 10D. Well, the 5D satisfies, but it's out of my price range.

Feb 2006 30D - minor upgrade
Aug 2005 5D - major upgrade
Aug 2005 1DIIN - minor upgrade
Jun 2005 20DA - minor release (not really an upgrade)
Feb 2005 350D - major upgrade
