Hello, I'm a long-time reader and a first-time poster here.

Samy's Camera is selling a Lexar 512MB CF card for $299. It comes in a sealed blister package with a Lexar Media label on the card and full waranty information on the back. No reason to suspect there's anything fishy, despite the low price.

The card is "unrated," which means there is no speed listing. However, Samy's claims that the card is 12x. Short of trying the card out, is there any way to know for sure that this card is at least 12x? If it helps, the part number listed on the package is CF512-234. Samy's told me that this is a special package manufactured just for them.

Does Lexar make any 512 cards that are slower than 12x? If there's no way to confirm the speed of the card, would it be a bad idea to buy it and assume Samy's is giving it to me straight?

Thanks.

Read Phil's tests of CF Cards. Speed of cards varies in different brands of cameras. I think you'll find this review will answer many of your questions.

I've read the article very carefully. It does not help me determine the speed of this "unrated" Lexar card, which is what I'm trying to figure out.

I want to make sure this "unrated" card isn't a dog.

Thanks.

Sounds like a great price for a 512M card! If the speed is even decent I'd call it a good deal. Don't suppose Samy's will let you try it out, will they?

I am shopping for lexar cards and found a great source explaining the differences in 4x, 8x, 12x and now 16x cards..

The Galbraith web site has an excellent article on speed of lexar cards compared to other cards... read this article if you want to learn more about speed and what that means in terms of time to transfer data:

Ken,

If I understand the meaning of that article, Lexar doesn't (or at least didn't) make the 512 size in the 12x speed. That might be a concern.
