When I was looking for a photo hosting site, I narrowed my choice down to pbase and smugmug. Both seem to be fine services, but have fairly different characteristics so it depends a lot on what you are looking for.
In the end, I chose Smugmug because it has:
o Unlimited storage (so I can upload originals of everything and never worry about managing storage)
o Unlimited storage also lets me use the site as a secondary backup
o Printing services so friends and family can order their own prints
o Online support forum
http://www.drgin.com and great support at
[email protected]. You can actually talk to the founders and principles in the company
o Referral program that helps me pay for future year's subscription
o Upgrade available to a "pro" package if I want to sell photos for a profit sometime in the future
o Tons of clean looking templates to choose from for controlling the look and feel of your site.
o Base package
o The company is profitable and seems well run (so it will likely be around for a long time)
o Full range of access control (password protected galleries, private galleries, etc...)
o Multi-gallery, unattended, unlimited uploads (so I can upload hundreds of images across many galleries all unattended)
o Good uptime reputation.
o Free 7-day trial.
I'd suggest you try both. More than 9 out of 10 who try Smugmug on the free trial stay and become subscribers. If you are interested in trying Smugmug, you should know that there is a discount coupon program so you can save $ on your initial signup. Phil doesn't wan the discount coupon codes posted here on dpreview, but you can go to my site (in my sig below), scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the "powered by Smugmug" link and then if you start your signup from there, the discount will be automatically applied (you can see the code embedded in the link).
Let me know if you have any further questions.
