How to save movie on DVD

Charles I might agree with you except the only way to get the video out of the camera is through the provided rca cable...so basically it is converting it to analog and then the dvd recorder converts it back to digital.....so you are taking a major picture quality hit.

if canon had included an ilink(firewire) out then yes doing this would be the best and fastest way...but as is...might be fastest but definitely not best.

I recorded 640x480 mjpeg movies into a dvd recorder on the max quality 1 hour setting and though the quality was good, there were significant jaggies on diagonals and other artifacts from the analogue to digital conversion that did not appear on the same clip when converted on laptop with intervideo windvd creator, let alone a top class software converter like main concept, when viewed on large screen tv and 1600x1200 laptop lcd. So the dvd recorder solution is easy and has other advantages but will not give you the best quality.

yeah...that is what I thought...maybe we should just write all the dvd player manufactures and tell them to start supporting jpeg avi :)

I truly hate converting my video to anything because it looks so good natively. h.264 is the best ive used but I can still see a slight degadation even with that.

I have not found anyway to convert to dvd mpeg2 format that does not significantly degrade.

this is all my opinion...im a video buff and so many will not notice the same things I do.

I have converted using a canopus hardware converter to dv and then feeding to dvd recorder via firewire cable to take the dvd recorder a/d out of the equation. Sure enough the canopus a/d was superior with artifacts reduced considerably but some were still visible making a good software conversion still the best quality. Admittedly the dvd recorder has to reduce digitally from dv to mpeg2 in this test. However making pal or ntsc recordings made little difference considering the original 640x480 mjpegs were 30fps.

I will look over all the different options you presented me with to see which one will be the easiest for me to understand. It is just great to have a place to go to for help like you all have done. Thanks again for all your kindness.

I like making DVDs of my little movies (and slideshows of still photos) and I don't think it's too hard. I use Roxio Easy Media Creator 7. There is just one encoding process, and on my 1 GHz laptop it tends to take twice as long as the movie is (30 minute movie = 1 hour to make the DVD). Also, I've found I need twice as much Hard drive space as will be saved on the DVD. So if Roxio says the movie is 3 GB, for some reason I need 6 GB empty on my hard drive. But it's only used temporarily. Once the DVD is made, Roxio deletes the temporary files it made.

Of course, you also need a DVD burner, or if you only have a CD burner you can make VCDs which are like DVDs, play on most set-top DVD players, but just aren't as good quality video.

I'll add another software to the list. It's called MySonic DVD Studio. I have the Deluxe edition. It can take any video file and burn a dvd. It even does tivo files. As simple as it gets. You just open the program, point to the file, and click the big red "burn" button. You can also add osme titles and change the background but that's not necessary to just burn a dvd if you don't want to.

They may have a free trial.

I just copy my AVI and WMA formats to a CD or a DVD(+ or -) and play then on my dvd player. Some of the dvd player on the market will play almost any Video format.

I have a Philips Progressive-Scan DVD Player Model: DVP3040 I bought from Walmart for 39.99(us) that plays almost any format (DIVX, DVD, WMA, MP3 etc..).

but it does not play mjpeg so the camera movie will need some form of software or hardware conversion first.... which is the whole point of this thread!

Thanks again...you all have given me something to think about.

Well, I finally got a program that was as easy as can be. It is dvdSanta.com. I downloaded other trial softwares and found them too complicated for me. I burned my dvd using this program. When I played it on my dvd player, I was thrilled to see the results.

This was my first attempt at using both the S-2 for a movie and this software. So there's still a lot to learn but baby steps are the way to go, at least for me. I would like to show you my movie but don't know how to get it into this forum. Any suggestions?

You could do one of a few things. Get a host for you to upload videos, etc and even make your own site. Cost is 10/month but you can find some good eeals with lower costs. This way would possibly be overkill unless you plan to do it often.

Upload the video to a place like http://www.putfile.com . You would then just post the link to the video. It's kinda like online streaming the video but there are ways to download the file.

Also, you could upload it via http://www.yousendit.com . This would just email you a link to the file and let people download it.

I'm sure others will have alternate methods as well.
