Hi there (first post)

Just bought a generic cga-s006 battery for my fz7 and Im wondering why it says 1200mah instead of the panasonic 720mah. The guy in the store said it was 800mAh.

says "for CGA-S006/DMW-BMA7, 7.2V 1200mAh"

Does this mean its better?

No!
This capacity is often fantasy. You had a wise guy at that store.

Some cells have a slightly increased capacity, but there are reports that the capacity of the original cells lasts longer.

The price is a good reason to buy compatible cells. You can buy many of them for one Pana cell and this is true capacity!
I am using generic cells since a year and all of them are ok still!

If you need more power: there are external power supplies.
Even a simple DIY pack with 6 AA cells helps: around 2500 mAh!

Got mine from Ebay. It's 1200mAh, 7.2V. Weighs a bit more than the original one but performs just as good. The seller says its CE approved and fits European standards. If you're gonna buy from Ebay just make sure the seller has good feedback rating and the item descrpition doesn't look dodgy. If you happen to live in Australia here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Battery-For-Panasonic-CGA-S006-CGR-S006E-DMW-BMA7-FZ30_W0QQitemZ7631938785QQihZ017QQcategoryZ43436QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem or you could use it just for reference.

I bought one of the generic batteries from Battery Barn and it won't fit my FZ-7 without having to pry it out. I measured the two batteries with a pair of calipers and I could not find any measurable difference until I looked and noticed that the center channel on the panasonic battery is a tad wider than on the generic which must be causing it to snag. Evidently the cells are just a little bigger on the generic which is why the center channel must be smaller. It says it is 1000mah and the panasonic battery say 710mah.

Be careful that the generic will fit without hanging in your camera.

The center channel between the cells on my generic battery is smaller than on the original equip battery which must be causing the snag. I measured with calipers and the dimensions of the two batteries are identical except in this one area.

Thanks everyone for such indepth responses. Funny thing is something that weighs a matter of grams can be air expressed to my house in 2 days and the camera is stuck in road australia post for a week. I will let you know if the battery fits when I get the camera!! but 22$ is worth it even if it doesn't fit properly which im sure it will.
