I was convinced I was going to buy the H2, but now the H5 looks even better (naturally!) Can't wait for that review later this week.

I see that the H5 comes with Cyber-shot Viewer software and the H2 doesn't . I was going to buy some software for viewing, cropping and emailing pictures, is the viewer software able to do this or will I be buying new software anyways.

Thx

According to the german Sony site that's not true. Both come with the viewer software:

http://www.sony.de/product/CompareProducts.action?site=odw_de_DE&pcReturnUrl=%2Fview%2FView.action%3Fsection%3Dde_DE_Products%26productcategory%3D%252FDigital%2BPhotography%252FDPH%2BDigital%2BStill%2BCameras%26site%3Dodw_de_DE%26page%3DProductSeriesHome%26site%3Dodw_de_DE%26category%3DDPH%2BDigital%2BStill%2BCameras&models=DSC-H5&models=DSC-H2

Search in the web page for software.

There would be no reason for Sony to drop the software. It's just a cheap CD.

H5 is definitely a better choice as compared to H2 --

As far as buying a viewer application is concerned -- I think you will waste your money because a lot of free viewers are available that provides a variety of functionalities for image processing and viewing.

The best one out there is Picassa --

Who says?!
What? 1" bigger screen and 1 mil more pix?
:)
I think the higher resolution of the H5 LCD (230,000 vs. 85,000) alone is worth the extra $100. The huge LCD screen and 1M more pixels are just gravy.

I don't think the viewer is that good of software, unless you sort photos on calendar. I'd just put it in a folder named July or other. ;-]

IMO I think you would be best served getting the H5. I tried both side by side and simply liked the little things extra that the H5 have that make it worth the extra $$. I also bought both, the H5 and the S3 IS to try out and return the one I didn't want. The salesman told me the H5, though a little cheaper was the hands down winner, needless to say he gloated profusely when I brought the S3 IS back. It simply couldn't match up in same enviroment settings.

Huh?? Seems like you're responding to me. But I wasn't talking about the software viewer. I was talking about the LCD viewer.

I'm anxiously awaiting the review. We don't go on vacation until the end of July, so as long as I have my new camera and have some time to play!!!

I'm a little afraid the big screen will drain the batteries....although the bigger screen would be pretty cool.

It's not the same as a gas-guzzling Hummer (another H- thing). Batteries and recharging them are cheap, not like gas. The battery efficiency of the H2/H5 is good enough to enjoy your big screen without worrying about overspending your budget.

In comparing the picture quality between the 3S and H5 any clear obvious winner? How about with flash pictures?

In comparing movie mode quality any clear winner?

What specifically in your opinion did the H5 do better than the 3S.

Thanks

Rick

Does the picasa software also do compression for sending via e-mail or is there a better software package that does that?

Thank you

Rick

Piscasa does it by simply setting a limit on the size of e-mail images. All other viewing software that I know of (ACDSee, PS Album, etc.) does it as well. One is not better than the other. It's just what you're used to.

If you want fo impress people, the 3" LCD and a black camera of the H5 will do it for the average person. Otherwise, buy the H2 and an add-on lens for the same price. Image quality is great on either, by the way. Make sure you have enough money left over to buy Photoshop Elements or the equivalent.

For my untrained eye, yes there was a clear winner, the H5. After taking snaps outside and indoors and putting them on my comp, the H5 appeared to me to have more vivid colors, not as flat like in the S3. The flash on the H5 is ungodly, stood in my bedroom with all the lights off and the flash produced a brighter pic by itself, than with the lights on and a flash. The lcd on the S3 in an outdoor setting was for me practically useless, I never had one problem with the huge "3 lcd on the H5, even with the sun at my back. I do believe the S3 has better action scene qualities as my wife helped with some tests as in waving arms back and forth quickly, the H5 produced a red ghosting effect, the S3 was clear as a whistlle. Ultimately, the HUGE lcd, the extra 1.2 mp's, the popup flash, and the photos I actually took and compared on my "21 inch lcd monitor were the deciding factor for a simple soul like me.

exactly the same situation as mine

Because of H5's 7.2 mp, 1/2.5" sensor (with smaller pixel ditch than H2's 6.0mp, 1/2.5"), it seems like H5 could conceivably be noisier than H2.

why did sony have to make this new sensor smaller than their old

7.2mp, 1/1.8" that was used in many compacts and which, by the way, was praised by dpreview for its noise levels??

any thoughts on this?

To get the zoom range at an economical price. I'm amazed that Sony can produce a pretty decent image with such a small sensor at ISO 400. It's a nice piece of engineering design though I find the PF visible more than I would like but it's easy to fix in PP.
