How many worms can one Bluebird eat???

I put meal worms out each morning for our resident Bluebirds. Mama comes right over and snatches up as many as she can. She then sometimes flies right into the nest box and feeds the little ones, but sometimes flies to a perch and kind of beats the poor meal worms to death... It's funny how she does that. Ultimately, she'll fly down to the ground to pick up the worms she dropped and then end up in the box feeding the young. BTW, I peeked into the box this morning and the chicks are growing feathers... They are too low in the box for pics but I'll try to get some as they fledge.

Here's mama with a beak full of worms:
D70, bazooka

BTW, I was about 15' away from her when I shot this. She's getting used to me and my worms... :-)

...Hi Jim. I had put out some meal worms and the next day they were gone but I didn't see what got them. I put out more and when I went to take a look, all I had was a bunch of black ants carrying them away. DAMN!

Really great capture here Jim. This bazooka, which lens is that? I can't remember and I don't know much about Nikon lenses.

Great shot and what a lucky bird family to have you serving up dinner like that!

LOL! Ants gotta eat too!

Thanks Andy!

My bazooka is a 500mm f/4 manual focus lens. It's chipped so metering and all other auto settings (except AF) work with the lens.

Thanks Carol!

She comes down for the worms as soon as I put them out. I find that I can just hang around about 5' away and she still comes down. Unfortunately, the lens needs 15' to focus... I guess I need extension tubes!

Great shot as usual. Guess she is getting out her frustrations when she beats the worms up? :D lol

Thanks for the post.
