Has anyone any experience of the 60mm f2.8 Canon macro lens in use on a 300D or 350D? With the angle of view adjustment it is equal to a 96mm lens.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi there

Its perfect for flowers and a joy to use for them.

I never use a tripod for my flower shots with this lense, or in fact my other macro lense - I also have the Canon 100mm macro.

I bought the 60mm earlier this year and have been extremely pleased with it, particularly with the flower shots that I have taken with it. I can get much closer to the flower than with the 100mm, which is how I prefer to take my flower shots.

I have been using the canon 60mm for macro shots for about six months.

It's very good for macro shooting of flowers and also for insects. But for insects, I mean the small ones, I suggest adding a close up lense (generally I use Hoya 4+ or also two Hoya 4+ and 2+ sticket together) in order to have more magnification (been careful not to exagerate, because the more you magnify an object the more depth of field you loose :-) )

It's also a good lens for portraits...

And it's fast AF (even if for macro shots you should quite often manual focus, expecially while shooting small insects...) and silent, and when you are near a insects it's a great thing to be silent not to make him escape...

And... it's a quite compact lens

From by brief excursions into macro photography, I have learned that working distance between the subject and the camera is an important factor. For that reason I splurged and purchased the Canon 180 f3.5 macro for my 5D. This suggests to me that a 100 mm macro might be a better bet for the 350D.

A good tripod is also important. One of the variables that you use in macro photography is depth of field. Sometimes a narrow depth of field is just what you want. That translates into fast shutter speeds. Sometimes a wide depth of field is appropriate. I often shoot at f16 or even f22 with a very slow shutter speed.

Good luck and have fun.
