Damn SONY.. you're killing us!!!

Has anyone else here read the review of the new Sony dSLR?

Some of the comments in that thread are a scream. Seems like a
playground squabble where the kids argue about who has the biggest
dad. I'm pretty confident that those who have a real interest in
photography will no be seeing this announcement as the second
coming...

Sony makes some very good video gear which is a far more complex
piece of kit than even a high end digital SLR.
Sony only builds very good vido cameras in the $10,000 + range. The rest is rather mediocre. And in the prosumer range they rip you off with the accessores.

They have been very inventive once, but those times are gone. A lot of people in the video don't like Sony much as they always try to cook their own soup in regards to standards.

Well, I'm not saying anyone should switch brands. I'm not even saying I will switch brands.

I guess what I'm saying is that the feeling of being trapped by the economics of your situation or staying with a system out of 'brand loyalty' is bad for you photographically. It is probably bad for photography itself, in the long run. You get the tools that will do the job the best for you and you pay the price to get those tools if the brand you have won't provide them.

It's easy to start to feel contempt for the consumer; after all, there are a LOT of dumb consumers out there! I'd rather have Olympus fear my fickle nature than feel I'll buy any piece of junk they throw out there or calmly wait to develop myself photographically while I wait for them to provide an upgrade path that will allow that development.

Just because I bought an Olympus camera, doesn't mean I am a certain future sale for Olympus. They need to compete just as hard for my next purchase as they can because I AM listening to the competition!

Some see the cup as half empty, others see the cup as half full. Personally, I see the cup being knocked over.

Only a multi-millionaire is not affected by the economics of the situation.
or staying with a system out of 'brand loyalty'
Only an idiot stays witha system out of brand loyalty. I owe Oly precisely nothing.
is bad for you photographically.
Only in so far as one could be using a better camera.

In a perfect world Oly would be terrified of me.

Do you own many lenses? I'm a safe touch. A half competent E3 at half sane money, and they've got me. Only if it is a piece of junk or insanely expensive is it economically viable for me to switch.

Something else bothers me about the Sony entry into the DSLR pack...

The "dust buster" isnt a proven feature, just a new feature..

It may work as well as Olympus' system, it may not.

Sony has a track record of REALLY "messing" with the established customer base..

Here is a "for instance":

When I had a Sony F-828 I also had a Sony Digital Camcorder and an H-1 (stabilized long zoom digicam) and an F-717.

The F-717, The Camcorder, and the F-828 all used the same battery.(fm-50)

When I purchased some "clone" batteries, they would only work with the camcorder and the F-717... the 828 came up with a screen that announced that the camera would only work with a "Genuine" Sony Battery, and propmptly shut down...

Then when Sony came out with a replacement for the H-1 camera, they saw too it that it could only work with the very newest memory sticks.. (the little bitty ones, I have forgotten what they are called), so all Sony owners would have to buy new memory sticks if they wanted that camera...

I didn't complain to Sony, as I know from experience, all complaints fall on deaf ears at that company.

My solution was to sell the F-717, the H-1, and the F-828 on Ebay, and switch brands to Olympus and Canon.

I bought an E-300 to replace the 828, a Canon S2 IS to replace the H-1, an Oly C-770 for a pocket camera, and an Oly E-500 as a backup.

The digital Cam-corder went straight to the trash bin, when I found a suitable replacement.. Nothing wrong with it, it only had a few hours on it.

Give Sony half a chance, and they will mess with the customers they already have, while trying to gather in more people.

They lost a long time customer when they lost me... I had been a Sony advocate since they introduced the "Trinitron" way back when...

Now I wouldnt take a Sony product as a gift.. I wont have a Sony product in my home.

I think the new Sony looks interesting, but my experience with Sony is that their products don't always measure up to their marketing.

I love my Oly because of the Oly Color - we don't have any idea what the picture quality will be like out of the Sony.

So Sony has a new system out. Come on. There is always going to be someone coming out with something...newer, cheaper, faster, etc. etc.
The camera is just a tool for capturing those moments. Seems to me less
whining and more shooting is what's needed. You become a better
photographer by practice.....not by using a new camera system. What
separates the amateurs from the pros is the amateur rushes out to buy

every new piece of equipment that comes along....while the pro masters what he already has.

It's virtually dead last of the entry level set now.

Even Pentax is offering more features ..... not looking good.

I'd say one very important thing...GLASS! The 14-45 is good as a kit lens goes; the 40-150 is awesome.

In addition: small, light body, great ergonomics, etc. etc..

Also (and more subjectively) Oly colour.

God won't save you when the waves are lapping at your feet. Climate change is happening, and it's going to kill millions of us this century unless we do something now.

When Oly first made its breakthrough into the dSLR market... it
offered the E1 + what was it.. 7 lenses?
It was either 1 lens (14-54mm) or 2-3 (14-54mm, 50-200mm, 50mm macro). The 14-45mm and 40-150mm were announced with the E-300 introduction, 1-2 years later. I think some of the high end lenses were announced at the same time (35-100mm, 150mm, 300mm), though they obviously were not targeted to the E-300. The 35mm macro, 18-180mm, 17.5-45mm were introduced with the E-500. I don't recall when the 11-22mm, 8mm fisheye and 90-250mm were announced. Then there is the 14-35mm which has been announced and has not shipped.

However, until we see sample shots, particularly shots done by users, who knows whether it will be a clunker or not. It they kept the garish Sony colors without an option to mute them, I certainly will not be buying one. I tend to think the MSRP of the body is on the high side for an entry level camera, and the lenses are slower, which negates some of the advantage of the AS. Most of the lenses appear to be Minolta rebadged lenses, and are still more designed for film bodies than digital.

Betamax, memory sticks, bluray... and such sterling photographic tools like the 828... it was such a lovely shade of purple. Maybe they got it right this time, but not everything Sony touches turns to gold.

Let the hype begin.

Sony is making dSLR, with 20+ lenses to go with it ... This is GREAT!!! If there are another 5 - 10 or more dSLR makers, dSLR boxes will be as cheap as anything else electronic! I've multiple sets of other electronic stuff, why not dSLR? Who has a problem with better, newer things cheaper???!!! When there are more makers, they'll have too make the lens mount standard too (read 4/3), just like the vast majority of other things that have standard interface. Makers do not want to have standard interfaces for their product. Market forces them make that happen.

A DSLR is a machine, with hugely inflated price tage (compare to the many other good electronic stuff you use everyday). The camera makers have been enjoying their "good old days" for far too long. The Sonys and the Panos will end that, like MCI and Sprint etc etc put Ma Bell to rest. Remember the days your phone call costed you like a buck a minute? That was when there was no competition.

When some companies in China start making DSLRs, that's when the really good stuff happens and that will force the so-called high-end stuff cheaper and better.

Competition is good for buyers. Bad for makers. Great for technological advancement.

I am a buyer! The more maker, the better!

If Minolta didn't "kill" Olympus, why would the new Konica-Minolta-Sony Alpha endanger Olympus marketshare any more?

I think Sony will have an impact on the DSLR market, but it won't necessarily be carved from Olympus' 5% marketshare.

As another huge, well known, and fairly well respected japanese electronic giant, the Sony brand is going to pull consumers shopping at big box retailers that would have normally ponied up for the Canon.
