Camera Stopped Shooting

Hi John

John is for sure telling the truth. I live in North Georgia mountains and the humidity here is so bad, that at times when I go outside my eye glasses fog up completely due to it. I dont have the 7D but a 5D here and no trouble so far. If John says it is humid here believe him LOL.

John I must say I like your saying at the bottom of your post. Brought a real smile to my face when I read it.

Hi Eric,
I'm so old that I get three retirement checks - so it fits me well.

Thanks,
John

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming, 'WOW! What a ride!!'

Turn shutter lock off again in the menu. Every time you reset the camera you will need to re-set this. If your camera is working once again after setting shutter lock off then I think you have a lens contact issue.. Clean the contacts on the lens and on the camera body and see if that will fix your issue. Good luck!

If you think it is a humidity problem, (condensation occurs in the camera, when it is taken from a cool environment to a warm humid enviroment) I keep my camera in a large baggie when I take it from a cool air conditioned room to the warm, humid outdoors. Placing the camera in the baggie in the cool dry air, sealling the baggie, than take it outside, giving it plenty of time to warm up, then opening the baggie. That way, there are no cool surfaces for condensation to form on. I know this is a pain, but when dealing with electronics....that is a fact of life. I have used this technique in the tropics, and never have a problem.

John, Eric,

I have to believe you two. It would be a disaster if humidity impacted the camera. I do intend to have Sony take a look at it. Will provide feedback.

ALL these problems sound disturbingly similar. If you monitor every "My 5D/7D doesn't work", it seems they are almost all related to "I turn it on, the thing makes a funny sound, and won't take pics". It's consensus that it's the AS initializing (and failing).

My first camera did this (dead on arrival). I'm starting to think I was foolish to buy a second one. I'm almost expecting mine to break any day now.

You'd THINK you'd still be able to take a pic without it! What a stupid software design to eliminate ALL picture taking if the AS fails.

I had the exact same problem with my fairly new 7D. It would start to work again intermittently. I sent it in to Sony, who sent it to Precision Camera. The CCD needed to be replaced. It took about a month, because of parts, but Sony has kept me updated on the status.

The number to call is 877-462-4464. This will actually take you to Konical Minolta support.

I followed the website instructions and it took my repair a little longer. So, call the above number for better instructions.

Yes, I, along with several others, have descibed these exact symptoms. It is the AS circuitry and will have to be sent off and replaced. PCVR will take 5-6 weeks to repair. It is an agonizing length of time to be without a camera. But, once returned, so far so good. Good luck.

Shooting with a Minolta since I was 14....

I went to the Sony web site seeking support on this issue. They have no local dealers, so I had to call a toll free number. I actually got connected to a Konica-Minolta guy. He was very courteous and helpful. He said we could attempt trouble shooting teh issue via telephone but since my warrantee period was coming to an end very soon, I would be better off mailing the camera in.

I mailed it in on the 31st. This was sent to some Sony repair center in CT. Will provide more information as I get it.

Mine is doing the same thing to. I talked to KM and they redirected me to a Zoomtron because I am in Canada. I will send it to them tomorrow.

Have anyone getting this problem consistently? Did it ever fail to work after? My firmware is 1.00u. It stoped working after being shipped on airmail for a couple of weeks.

Cheers,

Thanh

Mine locked up about 5 times this weekend durign the Champ Car race in Milwaukee. It was hot, but not unbearable.

Funything, I can always tell that it is going to happen because 2 things happen.

One: If anitshake is on, then it starts blinking

Two: the image on the LCD screen is slightly off compared to what I see in the View finder. ( For example, If I took a picture of the horizon and the horizon line was sitting horizontally across the center of my screen, After I took the shot, the horizon, would appear above the center line on the LCD and the computer screen, about 10% higher

Instant Fix.... Turn it off and have a cup of coffee. I'll wait about 5 minutes and the thing is just perfect again. I have a feeling it has to do with over heating the Antishake unit, whether the A/S is off or on. I took over 1000 shots this weekend a total of about 17 hours of shooting. During the race itself, i shot over 300 photos in 2 1/2 hours, so I definatley think it is over heating from use, not so much temperature.

I was going to send mine in, but i needed it for the race weekend. When i contacted them last month, the said to me that they were runing at about 40 days for camera repairs since the Sony/KM merger. Hopefully that wait is over now.

I checked their web site. Not very informative. Just says being repaired. But thanks for the information. Its good to know where my camera is.

Hi

I'm new here but thought I would chim in when I saw this post. I have the 7D also. I received the camera as a Christmas gift so it's fairly new. I have the anti shake blinking lights and my counter was at 0. Mine also makes a funny noise when I turn it on. If I leave it alone for awhile and turn off the anti shake it's fine. The only thing is that I missed my twin daughters' birthday party because the camear stopped working so I don't think I should chance it again. I've already emailed them and talked to the customer service on the phone. Not much they could tell me without looking at. I guess I'm not the only one now with this problem. I'm sending mine in this Friday. They also told me it was 10-15 days once they recieved the camera. I hope they are right. I don't have a back up. I really like the camera though and have been a loyal Minolta user in the past. Anyway just thought I would share what happened with mine.

Am sorry to hear this. I was hoping that mine was an isolated problem. I am also hoping that they will fix this problem permanantly or that if it recurs they will fix it free of charge. I love my 7D but if this is a common and recurring problem I will be very upset.

I would send in the camera ASAP if I were you.

And just to confirm the symptoms I was experiencing are identical to yours.

Had the same problem out of box. Don't waste time - send it to KM, ups... I mean Sony :) Probably will take a month or so - depends on the parts availability! The good thing - they will clean, calibrate the camera and update software!

I have just experienced a similar problem with my 7d.

I switched the camera on this afternoon and heard 2-3 seconds of clicking following the lense cycling after which the camera would get a focus lock but would not allow me to actually take any pictures. I tried switching the camara on and off several times, detaching and re-attaching the lense, trying different lenses but nothing worked :-(

That is until I put the whole thing in the fridge for 30 minutes. It was a treatment that worked wonders as my previously malfunctioning camera suddenly sprung to life and has been working for the last hour or so without a problem :-)

It's not the first time I have had this happen, although it's probably 9-10 months since it last occured. I have now decided to send the camera in for repair as it can't be right that it wont work when the weather is a bit hot and humid, and I'm certain I am not always going to have a fridge handy when I am out and about!

It's odd though that a bot of heat and humidity seems to affect the unit in this way :-(
