I am looking at getting a new digital camera and don't know what one to get and what features to focus in on. I currently have an Olympus D360-L. I am new to photography and don't know too much. the price range that I am looking is around $600 or so. It seems like the c-2100 is a favorite on the forum. I am looking to use the camera to take nature pictures, pictures of automobiles and pictures of people. I doubt that I will print the pictures too often. I was also looking at the c-3040. I am worried about the 2100's size it seems a little big. I have no Idea really where to start in selecting the camera. any help would be greatly appreiciated.

If you plan to do a lot of nature pictures, the 2100UZ is your best bet. CompUSA is selling them for $499 this weekend. That's a good price. Some stores are out. Check their website for your zipcode if you are interested. --Juli

Size is in the eye of the beholder. Some say the C2100 is too big, some say the C-700 is even too big, some want something that will fit in their pocket. Neither the C3040 or the C2100 will fit in your pocket. You'll just have to play with one to see if you can live with its size.

If you are taking landscapes, I'd go with the C-3040. This is because it has more resolution and zoom is not needed. I'd take the C-3040 for shooting cars as well.

For animals, definitely the C-2100 and it's ability to zoom. For people there are two main types, portraits and candids. Either will work for portraits, but the C2100 will generally let you get better candids with the long zoom.

Todd,

The only reason they are any bigger than the rest of the C series is the fantastic 10X lense. I would imagine if you got one and took a few pictures where the 10X helps, you'll forget about it's size. I have the E-100 and love it, basically the same size as the 2100. I went to it from a D-400Z that would fit in my pocket.

Most of the people on this forum will likely tell you to get the 2100, but bear in mind that they are all delusional from EFS (that's Excess Fun Syndrome). This is very common for owners of the 2100. You see, the 10x high quality image stabilized zoom is just too much for most people to handle. Add to that a crystal clear output with good color rendering and next thing you know they are out snapping photos of ducks, penguins, zoo animals, family, friends, hawks, eagles and anything else that comes in their path. You may want to try this camera if you're brave, or ...you may want something a little more tame, something that won't place your relationships at risk. I hear that even the ducks are getting nervous and flying off when they see certain people from this forum approaching. Problem is, by time the duck can tell who it is, it's too late, they've already been shot!
