Got my H2; some comparisons to H1

Just picked an H2 up from Circuit City. I took a few quick test shoots before I hop on a plane tomorrow morning for a quick business trip to Spokane and Seattle.

Initial observations:

EVF a little smaller and a lot higher resolution; like a little R1 finder. In store comparison with the S3 was no contest--H2 wins.

MF Peaking seems to work fine and should be a real help.

I think the new sensor might out resolve the VCL-DH1758.

Movie mode better, but not great. Zoom works but introduces a low hissing sound.

AF seems faster and better in low light.

Pixel Peeping puts the H2 better, on all of my test shots, than the H1.

Perceived build quality not as high as the H1.

Almost totally free of CA/PF.

I do not think the H2 will ever win any awards for ergonomics.

John, I disagree that the EVF is smaller in the H2 - the eyepiece itself is a bit smaller, but the image at "the end of the tunnel" seemed larger to me.

Otherwise, I feel you summed it up very thoroughly.

I don't think it's a very big mistake - as you say, it's very close to the same.
Here's my impression from about 3 wks ago:

Clearly, you were much more thorough - but the EVF was something that a couple of people on here were on about at the time, so I made a point to be as certain as I could at the time about what I was seeing.

I've had the H2 a few days now - I do like it - hate the positioning of the "menu" button - it's OK until you try for a sideways grip on the camera, then you are all over it. :(

Cheers to you,

I had the chance to check one out at Target today - It had the lens adapter ring mounted on it. I'm just wondering is this the same adapter as the one on the H1? and is there a way to put a protective filter on the adapter and still use the included lens cap?

Thanks
Mike

How do you compare the LCD between the cameras? I'm use to the 2.5" on my S90 - love showing recent photos off to everyone - the H2 seems a tad small at 2".

Definitely smaller. If you want a great LCD you need to wait for the H5. My H2 will probably be sold once the reviews are in on the H5.

I seldom use the LCD to view pictures. I do use it some for framing and autofocus and parameter read out. The H2 is OK for all of the above, but not as good as the H1.

Keep in mind that I haven't had a chance to fully test it. Who knows, it might be much better in sun that the H1.

I never had a chance to try the H1 outside but I find the H2 LCD almost useless for composing outdoors in bright sunlight. The EVF is better but requires a cupped hand over the eyebrow to shield the viewfinder and the eye. I wish they had designed the EVF tunnel with a groove to accept a rubber hood like the one on my Sony handicam. I wear bifocals, which just adds to the problem.

I agree with Ken about the location of the menu button. I'm constantly hitting it. These are minor gripes about an otherwise fine camera.
Bye for now.

Hi Dwight,

You mentioned that menu button issue the other day... I hadn't really fought with it up to that point, but did shortly after... if shooting sideways it's pretty much mandatory to be lens end down, so to speak.

As you say, not a big deal, but a pain.

I'm getting really good pics, at least I think they are - very pleased.

Hope you are having fun too.

Yes Ken...

I'm really starting to enjoy my camera. I still don't get as much time to play as I'd like but I expect to have it for a long time and look forward to a happy and rewarding relationship.

I was telling Ernet the other day that I'd like to spend at least a full day along the shore of Lake Superior, between here and Wawa. There's some spectacular scenery up there. I used to travel it regularly so saw it through all seasons and lighting conditions. Sometimes an awesome photo is all in the timing.
Glad the hear that you're enjoying your's too.

Regarding pixel-peeping, could less noise be due to more in camera processing? That would mean a slight loss of detail i.e. image quality wouldn't it? What is your feeling regarding overall image quality? sharpness?
Thanks a lot.

Sorry,

Can't elaborate, heading for the airport.

Image quality better than H1 in all aspects. Haven't had a chance to check that many images for color, etc. But, first blush, outstanding.
