Printing Thom Hogan's ebook

Thom's ebooks are worth their weight in gold. I have owned the D100, D70, D2X, and now the D200 ones, and the information and how it is presented is just fantastic.

I also HIGHLY recommend his Nikon DSLR writings, which are set to reappear in a month.

I printed mine myself double sided on 24 lb. paper. It looks like
the single volume edition of War and Peace.

Whew!. I thought it was just me. I put mine in a three ring binder, with tabs for the 3 sections. It is 1 3/4 inches thick. How did Kinkos or Staples bind it.

Here's how Staples bound mine. I really like the ease with which I can turn the pages.

What, size paper were the books printed on 8.5"x11"? I know my D70 boook from Thom is set based on 5.5"x8.5", simply cut 8.5"x11" in half then have it printed on double side would save much paper and possible printing.

They're 8.5x11. Like Thom's D70 book, his D200 eBook is also designed to be printed out at 5.5x8.5, but I specifically asked for it to be printed at the larger size.

I took my e-book to Kinko's, they had no problem when I showed them the CD & Information on how to print and the note on the back of the CD case. It came out really well, but it did cost $60, but it was well worth It

My day job is as a design engineer for a rather large manufacturer of colour laser printers. One of the perks for working my butt off on ridiculous project schedules is that I get to use one of our prototype printers at home, with free consumables (toner, paper, etc.)

Having made you all ridiculously green with envy, here is what worked for me.

I printed the entire e-book on normal letter-size (A4 for you metric types) paper, 4-up per page. With duplexing, the whole lot is less than 100 sheets of paper. This is more than manageable enough for binding with a "comb" style binder (see http://www.gbcoffice.com/products/binding/combbindsupplies.asp ).

The 4-up printing (4 pages of the e-book printed on one side of a sheet of paper) is selected in the printer driver. It cuts printing size, volume, cost by a factor of 4. The result (size) is very readable. The comb binding lays flat and is more durable and portable than a 3-ring binder.

Just a suggestion.

Brilliant, thanks. How about printing both sides, is there a trick for easily doing that?
regards - tom

wow, great idea! I forgot about that whole 4 pages per page deal. I think Acrobat Distiller will allow you to do the same thing. Print to PDF and then print the 4 per page pdf.

I wonder if there are any free drivers / apps out there that would do this as well (a full blown version of Acrobat is kind of pricey)?

I'll be printing my copy of the ebook at work, using Adobe Reader 7.x:
Page Handling:
Page Scaling: Multiple pages per sheet
Pages per sheet: 2
Page Order: Horizontal
Uncheck Auto-rotate pages.

Printer Properties (different for each printer):
Page/Output size: Letter
Page Layout: 1 page per sheet.
Finishing: 2-sided; bound on Short Edge (Top); Collate

This will cause 4 pages to be printed per sheet --> 183 sheets of paper. Manageable... :=) ... better than 732 sheets.

You paid $85 for a printed copy of Thom Hogan's D200 book? I hope
it was engraved on 100% cotton paper with hand-colored plates!
That sounds absurd to me also...

????????? When i was in elementary school i was taught that 732/4 = 183: 732 pages / 4 pages per sheet == 183 sheets.

732 pages div by 2 pages per side div by 2 sides per sheet (duplex) yields 183 sheets of paper. I vote for the "flyingdutchie" answer. It's a darn good thing I'm an engineer, or this would give me a headache !

Personally, I find the results quite readable at 4 pages per side. Since the original e-book pages are already half of a letter size page (5.5" x 8.5"), printing 2-up per side is "full size". As the more astute forum participants are wont to say, printing 4-up per side results in a full 1-stop correction factor. - had to get that in there, somehow! -

In my printed version? Nothing is in color. It would cost to much to have a place like Kinko's or Staples print it in color.

If you read it on the computer, there is a lot of color.

No, front to back 366 - 2 pages per sheet. You said better than 732.

2 pages printed on the front of each sheet, 2 pages printed on the back of each sheet --> 4 pages total on each sheet. I just printed it; the printer spat out 183 sheets.

Doesn't matter... I'm gonna read through it in a little while :=)
