From Canon to Nikon: D70s or D50?

I have used Canon EOS cameras for years. For travels, I have a small and light 350D with Sigma 18-125 lens. Nice, but Nikon 18-200 VR seems so much better solution for travels with one lens only... Now my question is, should I go for Nikon D50 or D70s.

There is no much difference in size/weight. What about image quality, specially with minimal post-processing and jpg-s? Which camera will satisfy me more?

I know that D70s has to offer a lot more features, but not all of them are important to me on a travel body. Probably I will miss optional viewfinder gridlines the most, if I will get D50. Maybe it would be nice to have 2 dials instead of one, but then the dials and ergonomics of D70 were strange for my Canon-hand anyway...

So - D50 or D70s for someone switching from Canon 350D?

Get the D50 :) Its produces better jpegs. Only thing ul miss will be the Lcd illuminator :) Having both, i prefer to use the d70 coz i shoot raw.

D50 is geared for punchier out of the camera results. I owned a D70 too and I don't miss the extra features. Even boosting the settings on the D70, I still found the images a bit flat and need PP work as the camera tone curve is geared at protecting the highlights. You could load a custom curve to acheive the D50 effect. As for the gridlines you won't miss what you don't have....there's none on the 350D right? But I can say is that you will be well pleased with the 18-200mmVR. It's streets ahead of the sigma.

Sit down and write the down the differences between the two cameras, you can get them from Phil’s review. Then cross off the ones that don’t mean anything to you, and see if the remaining ones justify the difference in cost.

I can't imagine what you'll accomplish (in the short term) to any greater extent by dumping the 350D and getting the D50 or D70 (which I have and love). I'd wait until there's a D80 or something like that since the D70s is long in the tooth.

Just for its support of wireless flash. Also 2 dials make it easier to access some features. But both will give great results.

Of course no D80 or whatever next Nikon DSLR has been announced, but what is genereal prognosis, about when new Nikon cameras may be expected? In Canon world, new models are announced in about every 18 months, so for example, we may have 350D in fall.

Are we all sure that Canon don't have something like the 18-200VR in the works? It would be a shame to go to the expense of switching systems only to find that it wasn't necessary!

The D50 does feel smaller then the D70 and is easier to carry, pack, etc.

Perhaps you should trade your Sigma 18-125 for an 18-200 for now and see what the two mfgs do over the next year? I have the D70s and the Sigma 18-200 and am quite happy with the lense.

Regarding size, the D50 is smaller due to it using SD cards. This would certainly be in your favor coming from such a small camera like the 350. In terms of JPEG's, the D50 will come closer to your expectations than the D70 out of the camera, as its JPEG's have lots of punch and vibrant colors like the 350. In fact, the D70 is so conservative as it's images are intended to go through post processing, you may be immediately disappointed.

You won't miss what you don't already have. I have both cameras and really don't miss the additional features of the D70 when I'm using the D50. For example, the gridlines...I was always in too much of a hurry to remember to turn them on. Adjustable WB was a waste, as I almost always post process to some degree and Capture can quickly correct WB in RAW if needed.

The D50 will also give you more satisfying high ISO results over the D70s. Again, this is more similar to the expectations that you already are used to with the Canon.
