Just thought you all should know that the MAcBookPro does NOT work with Olympus E1 Studio Software that enables you to shoot right into your computer (tethered)

I have been dealing with Olympus Tech support and they are basically saying 'whenever' which is shoddy service.

I would like to hear from others who have this problem and encourage them to bug Olympus tech support so this does not take forever. The only option for all who need to shoot into a laptop is to buy the now obsolete Powerbook G4 or rent one.

If olympus is going to sell their equipment as professional equipment they really need to think about supporting it as professional equipment. Other companies had their new drivers out when the laptops started shipping. Most other software works with the MAcBook PRo using the Rosetta software, why not Olympus Studio?

True ..... Except for the fact that PS CS2 was out prior to Apple switching to Intel, so it's very much understandable that the benefits compared to the cost of converting it to binary would be very small (I believe here what Adobe says ...) Now, the OP didn't say what Studio version he's tried. I assume he was talking about 1.5. Sorry, but if this version is not running natively (not in Rosseta) in OS X than I'd agree that Oly dropped the ball as one would assume that they've had time enough. Maybe it would be worth to even postpone the release of 1.5 a bit and rather ensure that it works as binary.

I don't have Studio nor iMac Intel so I don't care, but tons of people do.

Cheers

I think if it's not fixed by 1.6 they can cry foul....

I'm still using a G3 300, everything works great, just a little slower.

I stayed there because I refused to upgrade Quark and Adobe on top of a G5. They only way I know how to revolt is with my pocketbook. Instead I built a nice PC, bought a 4x5, some lenses for 4x5 and RZ, a nice steak dinner, a weekend in west Texas.... etc etc.

seems a mystery why rosetta should not work ... if olympus customer service doesn't care it would clearly say how much they care for the kind of pro market that is in publishing, where still most work is done on macs ...

lets count the days til they wake up.

I'll have to try that. I just got a MacBook Pro after finding out my Powerbook's logic board is broken. I haven't installed Olympus Studio yet. I'm still running Photoshop 7 and it's doing fine, pretty much.

I am actually not surprised Rosetta does not work since a tethered-through USB operation sounds like something that includes time-critical code, which Rosetta being an emulation, may not do quite right.

Olympus can't just change overnight just because apple switched to Intel you know... I think they should have a better answer but on the other hand, you can't expect Olympus to worry about a super tiny marketshare for the moment (and I don't mean Mac but the new Mac-Intel Macs). Not even Adobe for Intel is out. Is Aperture from Apple even out yet for Mac Intels?

adobe runs fine on the macpros - aperture 1.1 in binary is announced, but what does it matter if 1.0 works fine.

developers, like olympus, had time since last summer to adapt their softwares.

and no, macs are not a tiny share my dear. with the postponement of vista even more people will switch to mac I bet.

If only the tethered function didn't work that would be I guess acceptabale and understandable mainly from the speed requirment standpoint. I am sorry, but Oly had time enough to make it at least run in Rosetta if not to have binary.

I don't think that you could say that Oly generally doesn't care. It was just a "bad apple" he got on the phone who didn't have a clue and wasn't willing to pro-actively find out. You see this type of customer service with every company around.

Cheers

Adobe doesn't run native on Intel Macs, and Adobe which is a HUGE software company was talking about the cost of "making it run." I woudn't expect Olympus to have it all ready to go on Intel Macs. Also they are talking about tethered applications- fault Apple for not having Rosetta run it (though again, I think it's quite understandable it wouldn't).

My dear friend, I explicitly made the point that "macs are not a tiny share" but the Mac Intel macs right now for the time being are. That was my point. Or are you going to say that a machine that just started to ship already has more units out there than the other powerPC macs?

I defintively agree with you on the customer service attitude. I disagree about Olympus "having time to have it up on Intel" - how many companies have that ready already? There's a cost involved here and it sure would be nice Olympus has that on Intel nice and running, ready to go, but I can understand why they may not have yet. They are hardly the only ones.

Maybe they didn't have to have it ready, but surely they could have easily postponed the release of the version till it was universal binary especially if they didn't launch any new miraculous features with that particular version Oly customers were screaming for. This way they actually wasted money, because now they will be under increasing pressure to make another version which will purely be for the binary conversion reasons. No new features or anything. If they don't, I am not sure what kind of message it will send to new potential customers buying Oly cameras.

But again it's a question of opinion. We all differ and that's good.

I don't think dumping E-1s for $675 or less constitutes selling them as professional equipment. And how many super high grade lenses do you think Olympus is selling at the moment given a competitive successor to the E-1 is no where is sight? Olympus have squandered any momentum they might have been gaining in attracting pros to Fourthirds.

Scott

If there are still some professionals who shoot with the E-1 they are probably on a Mac... And they are buying probably a MacBook Pro (because it´s just fantastic). So these high class users will be disappointed by the service of Olympus...

It´s just not adequate for the working of Pros.

It´s maybe understandable that Oly don´t offers a Universal Binary-version (yet) - but not that it don´t work under Rosetta... (almost all programs work under Rosetta)

It sounds like it works under Rosetta (Olympus Master does), except for the USB remote shooting & camera update features.

FWIW, there are features in the Adobe Creative Suite that don't work under Rosetta, either. Olympus is not the only company selling software with Intel Mac issues.

This is what Olympus added in the version 1.5 according to their release notes:

" Revisions for OLYMPUS Studio 1.5
  • Support for "E-330".
  • Fisheye Correction function added.
"

I rather have the support out for their latest cameras than waiting and holding a release for a universal binary.

I honestly don't think the current marketshare of an Intel Mac is big at all- meaning- I don't think there are that many customers there really, but they will just update it later on.
But again it's a question of opinion. We all differ and that's good.
Fair enough.

Huh? Where does the evidence that suggests this comes from?
