At the recommendation of Tracy (photo_mom) I purchased the Bogen/Manfrotto 3420 Telephoto Lens Support to use with my Pentax-A*300/4 and Pentax-A*200/2.8

After playing around with it for a bit, I decided that the way I want to use it is with my Pentax-F 1.7X AF Adapter and my Bushhawk Shoulder Mount.

I stepped outside today to check it out. Very overcast and bad conditions for what I want to do, but if I can use it in these conditions, then I can surely use it in better conditions.

Above - Pentax-A*300/4 plus Pentax-F 1.7X AF Adapter (510mm), Bogen/Manfrotto 3420 Telephoto Lens Support, all mounted to my Bushhawk Shoulder Mount.

Above - This cat is 250 feet from me. ISO200, f9.5, 1/350s, PP and sharpen.

Above - 100% crop from previous cat image.

Above - A small part of my mountain view from my Sittin' Place. ISO200, f9.5, 1/750s, PP and sharpen.

Above - 100% crop from previous mountain view image. Applied a bit more sharpening on this crop.

It looks to me like this set-up is going to be useable.

It looks like this is going to be a much better way to use this lens with my Bushhawk than I was previously doing it. This way makes the camera nad lens set-up much more secure.

Hi Ron!

Both of those images and the crops look great. I sure hope you like it as much as I do!

So now I have to go back and reconsider the shoulder mount. Except that with the camera, lens, and support it really does resemble a rocket launcher even more. I'm still concerned about that around where I live. ;-D

I also have that 3420 support Ron. It's amazing how it take care of lens flexing and imbalances. A minute extra mounting the lens is nothing compared to finally get those sharp pictures!

Thanks Tracy,

As I mentioined in the OP, I shot at ISO200 in bad lighting. I believe in better lighting and ISO400 I can get my shutter speed up to where I can maybe capture birds in flight with this. Time will tell if I am correct in this.

I think that because of where you live the best thing is to pass on the Bushhawk Tracy. I think it would be more hassle than it would be worth in your case. As I was using mine today, I was pointing across the street at my neighbors house, and the town cop drove by and eyeballed what I was doing. He just waved and went on by. If I go into the desert around here, I will be lucky to even see anybody, even if I were out for a month.

Thanks for recommending this lens mount to me Tracy. I think I am going to like it.

Hi Jonas,

Yes, it does take an extra minute or two to mount and get just right, but I think it is worth the extra effort.

This Pentax-A*300/4 is almost to short to use with the 3420 but it is fine with the teleconverter. I think the longer K300/4 would work just fine on the 3420 without the TC attached.

Thanks John! I did consider this, but the K300/4 does not have a non-moving part where this lens support could hold the lens... I'm not sure having it hold on to the converter would be a help... Furthermore it has a different (?) quick release plate than the one for the 234RC head I have for my monopod but that's a detail...

I continue looking around...

I have the bogen 3420 also but I don't have the A*s :^(
Just a 300/8 vivitar which seems to shoot a little soft and
with CA and/or sensor blooming when I photographed nesting

herons up in the trees against the sky with my DS. But I used the pentax 1.4s with the lens. I didn't think to try w/o the tc

BTW, I couldn't see your pictures thru the links.

John

Ron,

I assume the A*s do not have the tripod mount collar? That's why I bought the 3420 to use with my 300+1.4tc.

That's correct...no tripod mount on the A*200/2.8 or A*300/4

The images are showing fine for me. Maybe there was a temporary glitch.

Thanks for your comments John.

Good light to you.
