No one here picked up the story. He is a snippet from my nyiip newsletter.

Before we turn to the rundown of this month's articles, I want to take a moment to note the recent passing of Gordon Parks at age 93. He was one of the key 20th Century photographers and a notable crossover from photography to film making and other art forms. Indisputably, he was also an inspiring role model to many young photographers both black and white. I had the pleasure of hearing him speak several times, and the range of subject matter that came before his camera is remarkable. If you've never looked at his work, do so. Once I heard him discuss his very first job – a fashion shoot for a local Minneapolis department store with a twin lens reflex. He confided that he didn't know much about fashion work, but one frame came out fine and the client was pleased. We've lost a great photographer.

That was nice about Gordon Parks. Very educational, and soul touching. Thanks for bringing it to the forum. There is so much junk going on here some times, that it is nice to pay attention to something meaningful.

Thanks again,

(Who the heck was he)

I would like to learn more about this person (RIP, Mr. Parks)

Was he any where near the other greats of our time, like Avedon, Newton, Blumenfeld (check out that Vogue guy....!) , HCB, Bob Ccarlos Clarke, David Bailey (as well as his ex-assistant John Swannell), etc?

(sorry for all the Leibovitz fans out there, but she is nowhere even close to those other people)

Can anyone provide a link to Mr. Parks's work, or any info about him?

he was a very intelligent photographer who did fashion, photojournalism, sports photography & even made movies (Shaft)

his Ella Watson series that he made while a Farm Security Act fellow was in the grand tradition of Walker Evans & Dorthea Lange ...Parks was an impassioned activist for the civil rights movement
here is a favorite of mine from him

which sort of combined pj & fashion ...it does make a powerful statement which had to be even more so in 1956 when he took it
IMHO, Parks stands tall in the company you cited
