Michel,

Please use the search engine before posting your request. There are many posts on this topic already.
Good luck,
Nicholas.

The "torture" text is to shoot right at a very bright light that is in a dark or otherwise non-lighted fixture, overexpose by 4 stops, and use ISO 400. Then look at the image at 200% on a high-gain monitor.

The real-life way is to go out and shoot a few hundred images and then enjoy them.

If you don't know that your camera has banding then for all practical purposes it doesn't. If you perform more and more tests then you can probably find problems of some sort with any and all cameras. You also have the option of using and enjoying your camera. It is up to you to decide why you bought your camera - for endless testing or enjoyable use.

..if you can't see it yourself. Banding that is forced under specific weird circumstances is mostly a non-issue.

I have long banding in every outdoor picture that includes even very small amounts of overblown highlights, so no need to setup something special. Therefore the camera is at Nikon now in order to have it fixed for my trip to Venice next week.

Just shoot as you normally would, and enjoy the great camera. If you then have a problem with banding send it to Nikon to have it fixed. The banding discussion on this site approaches hysteria. There are I understand people who have had real problems but they can be fixed. Minor banding that can be achieved only by torture tests (severe overexposure and viewing at large magnification) is of no practical importance.

I think that unavoidable optical issues even on the best lenses (like CA, distortion, lower resolution in corners at wide open apertures, loss of resolution at small apertures etc) are of much more importance for image quality. But this is nothing anybody complains about, because they have had time to understand that there is in reality no optically perfect, only at the best excellent lenses. The same applies to cameras there is no perfect camera. You can find "issues" on all cameras when you search for them. Just look at the reviews on this site for highly recommended cameras and you will see what I mean.

The D200 is an excellent camera, enjoy it!
