Hi All, I have recently ordered a D50 but declined to buy a SD card from the retailer, planning to buy SD online. I read a thread that some SD cards dont work well with a D50, can anyone advise which cards Nikon endorse or good alternatives and how high in GB should I go.

Thanks

Hi. Like yourself, I have recently purchased a new D50. I have also just bought a Kinston Elite Pro 512Mb off Ebuyer.com for £22. I wanted the 1GB for £40 but they didn't have them in stock. This is a very good card and excellent value at present. hope this helps

Why is it that there is always so much month left at the end of the money?

In the Nikon manual they advise on Sandisk.
I use a 1Gb Sandisk in my D50.

No Ultra II or Extreme III. The D50 has a large memory buffer so in jpeg large fine it can buffer 9 pics. In RAW still 4 pics. For the way I shoot this is more than enough.

Might be a good idea to invest in some high speed ones. I have a lexmark 40x 1GB.... works quite well although I wish I had a faster one :)

I always thought an SD card was an SD card... didn't know there were official and non-official ones... anyone else had problems with certain SD cards?

Hiya m8,

just tracked down your email which landed in my spam bucket for some reason. I'll reply soon. We must get together when you come back from your trip.

On the memory card front. I have always used sandisk and up till now a couple of 512s for my canon were fine.

I am now trying crucial technologies (micron) sd card. (they are based in east kilbride and i use them very often). I will not ever put any other make of ram in any of the pcs i build so i thought i'd see how their media cards hold up and so far so good.

1gig card is 34 quid + free next day delivery. or if you are really keen phone in your order and you can pick it up from their reception.

Hi Dave

Good to hear from you, read that you got sorted with your D50 how's it been so far. I have actually ended up getting mine in Glasgow after all, got a D50 and a 18-70 for £530 for photo-optix in Braehead, unfortunately I need to wait for my Birthday before I am allowed to play with it!

that's the best way to go m8 then at least if something goes wrong early doors then you can take it straight back for a replacement. And an excellent price. Wonder if we'd get a deal anywhere for buying 2 50mm f/1.8.

Haven't had much time to play yet. Just an hour or so down at largs marina but it was dreich. Big difference to my Canon S2 though (as expected).

I'll reply to the e-mail later.

Hmm. I have been doing a little research on SD cards. I kind of feel the other way about this high speed cards with DSLRs. For DSLRs you dont need a higher speed cards. Especially for cameras like D50. You need high speed cards when you are sending data to store at a higher rate. Unless you are a sports shooter and shoot in burst mode you will not have huge data waiting for storage. Even i disagree with burst mode too. You have a 12 shot buffer on board and stores data in a queue for process. It does not make any difference having a high speed card or regular card.

High speed cards are useful if you are doing movie mode. writing 16 frames a second. This enables the camera to do fast processing of data from buffers and make a good quality videos.

Just because of data transfer rates are improved and they release higher and higher speed cards it does not make any difference for a amature user like me in investing in high speed cards. I rater put that mony on a good lens.

Just my 2 cents

I decided to ignore Nikon and go with something inexpensive. I picked up a 1GB 133x card by Patriot from some online retailer. I've taken about 1000 shots so far and it's worked like a champ. The transfer speed to my computer is pretty quick too.

I have tried them all pny, Lexar, kingston ans Sandisk, I would go the Sandisk Ultra II 1gb for sure, They are fast, Priced right, Some say you don't need a fast card, That is not true, With a fast card your buffer will unload faster.

Just carried out a quick test. shooting RAW.

comparing sandisk ultra II (high speed) and the one I mentioned above from crucial for 34 quid (std speed).

no difference whatsoever in performance of continuous shooting, 4 shots fill the buffer then exactly the same rate of shot thereafter. Buffer never frees up any memory with either card so the performance of the write on speed of the card (so called high speed cards vs std cards) is not an factor with the D50. maybe a camera with a faster write to speed may have issues. I can't say.

So there ya go.

Definately going to give Crucial cards a go, seems like a good option, thanks again for all advice

That is the same answer I received from Nikon, anything faster then 40X was a waste of money

I've gotten Crucial memory in my G5 and my previous PC, great cheap memory. I'd go with the Crucial SD cards too, but the price isn't extremely cheap on their site. ($40.99 for 512mb and $75.99 for 1gb) You can find deals cheaper than that. If you look around you can get PNY or San disks for the same price, but usually cheaper when on sale/rebates.

Bill, can you explain - "With a fast card your buffer will unload
faster"?
I've have not used a "faster" card yet. Exactly what are the
benefits?

If you shoot in continueous mode, I mean keep shooting, The camera will choke up using a slow card, Using a faster write card it won't choke up as much, It will write the images to the card faster and free up the buffer faster, Thoses that say there is no difference in a standard card and a fast card are wrong, I have run into this a lot of times, There is a big difference, Anyone else seen this?.
