Is the Nikon D50 SLRw/ Nikkor 28-80mm F/3.3-5.6 G Lens a good lens kit, or the
Nikon D50 Digital SLR w/18-55MM F/3.5-4.5G Lens kit.

I know that the latter one is a bit more. What would be the major
differences in the two.

Any help would be appreciated.

Much of a muchness really. The first lens is more suited to landscapes, the latter is a general purpose zoom. If you think you'll mainly be doing landscape/travel I'd go for the 18-55mm. Or stump up the extra and go for the 18-70...

Ooops, wrong way round - the 18-55mm is the landscape lens...

someone in fact just posted a thread specifically meant to pop up for people interesting in buying a D50. Search.

Consensus is 18-55 is better quality than the 28-80. But if you have the money ($200 more), the 18-70 knocks them both out of the water.

I bought the 18-70 when I got my d50 body and I love it. It's well worth the few extra bucks. There is almost always an 18-70 on ebay if you don't wanna pay the price of a new one.

It has a range on a film camera almost identical to the 18-55 on a digital camera. On a digital camera it would give you virtually no wide angle and a mild telephoto. You would probably end up wanting to buy both a wide angle and telephoto in the future, while with the 18-55 there is an inexpensive matching telephoto available.
