A big hello to all the Malaysian and Singaporean posters (plus everyone else out there who may know) !

I'm visiting family and friends in Singapore and Malaysia later this year. So far, I've checked out the forums and the net for the better shops in Singapore. I'll do the same for KL soon - but having had bad experiences with credit card cloning in KL - I am a little hesitant to buy anything in KL on credit card - I could do cash though.

Soooo, the question that needs to be asked - are prices better in KL or Singapore. The current exchange rate places the little AU battler at MYR$2.82604 and SGD$1.231. So obviously the little Aussie battler (bleeder) streches further in KL.

Can anyone advise if camera gear is cheaper in KL or Singapore - that is after appropriate currency conversions.

I've also been told that the Singapore Changi Airport Duty Free shops are worth a look.

I'm looking at buying the Oly 50-200mm lens. AND maybe the Extreme 3 CF cards if they are cheaper than in Oz (where everything looks very expensive comparatively speaking).

Thanking you all in advance

as far as I know DZ lens are still quite limited in KL, depending on how long you'll be here, you could opt to get the shops to order it for you. The only shop that I know of with extensive range of DZ lens is found at Fotodata outlet @ MidValley in KL. Try your luck at KeyColor, one of the local photographer's more favorable shops.

As for the CF cards, forget the camera outlets, go to places that sell computer stuff e.g. Low Yatt Plaza, Imbi PLaza or even the IT section in id Valley. You would have to shop around once there tho as prices differ from one shop to another.

enjoy yourself in KL.

Hi there,

When you are in Singapore, do check out this shop, Cathay Photo at Peninsular Plaza. It is accessible via the train system, you can stop over at City Hall MRT station and walk over.

They carry the widest array of Olympus gears and things are priced very competitively compared with the rest, not to mention the great service you will get from them.

With the currency exchange as it now sits, there does not appear to be any advantage in buying the 50-200mm lens in either Singapore or Malaysia.

The price in Oz is AU$1350. Prices I have seen on the net - in Malaysia Myr$4700 or AU$1643 - in Singapore Sgd$1700 or AU$1328.

If in the USA - B&H has the len for US$999 but factor in the shipping of US$56 and the lens comes up to AU$1400.

If I were in the US, I'd be happy as Larry (Curly or Moe maybe even).

But alas no.

I'll hold off buying in AU until I can buy it duty free.

Thanks for your help - your time and interest is appreciated.

Regards

Paul

go direct to the Oly forum:

they have a sticky thread where they maintain a price list.

Anything that's not there, just post a query and the people there will try to help :-)

Alan Photo's prices can be abit eratic... Cathay is consistent but usually slightly higher... plenty of other shops there... ask in the above forum closer to your trip for ideas... some guys might even take the time to help you spot the more unscrupulous sales...

I think the singapore price for the 50-200mm is REALLY high. the 11-22mm cost $1060 is a better buy.
