You'd have to be a little crazy to buy a D200...

until this banding thing gets straightened out. I have been reading all these posts and it is certainly apparant that there is a widespread problem. My particular D200 seems ok but if I were still waiting for a camera without a doubt I would cancel until a statement by Nikon was issued. Who wants to play THAT lottery?

I bought another one today! second one bought one around christmas time. I must be loco but I gotta have it! ;)

Waiting is no gaurantee of anything, so what if they fix the banding? (I still think it only affects a small percentage of camera's) That doesn't guarantee your not going to face some other problem.

For example, a percentage of D70's (mine included) suffered complete failure after 12-14 months. Nikon Fixed under warrantee. Some D70's suffer from premature shutter failure, even ones that have been made recently.

Fuji's and Canon's havae all had their issues too.

Bottom line is get the camera, get a good extended warranty and go shoot pictures.

A firmware update plus the replacement of a hardware component. That's what I was told...

From 1000 frames only 1 got it! common! grow up! you will get
software update and that is it!

May I ask who told you that?

My wife and I got into a huge argument because she said I never listen to
her..................at least I think that's what she said.

Yesterday I started a thread asking what had happened to an earlier thread concerning the banding issue:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=16648103

The original poster said Nikon was aware of the issue and that a fix was underway involving a firmware upgrade + the replacement of a hardware component (a PCB board???). I thought that was good news, but futher posts got me very worried again. This morning I received an e-mail message from someone who asked me not to reveal his identity. The rumours about firmware and hardware update seem to be correct. I cannot personally guarantee it of course.

Why dont Nikon just say that, it's far better to be honest and say there is a problem and get it fixed than to say nothing & do nothing hoping it will go away. People would respect them far more if they did that.

...is that they suspect (rightly, if this forum is any guide) that everyone with a D200 will want the upgrade whether they have the problem or not. If they announce the fix before they have the parts or service capacity to sort out tens of thousands of cameras, all they'll do is generate more dissatisfaction and griping about the fact that they aren't ready to implement the fix.

There's a chance that's why my repair is delayed, I guess. There's also a chance I'll get my body and AF issues repaired and get my D200 back in time to join the back of the line for the banding fix. Life's a *****...

I trust they'll do that in due time. They did it when there was a problem with th batteries of the D70.

Yes, I've seen it in a couple of images when I wasn't deliberately trying to produce it. However, it's easily fixable in PP and it's no bigger an issue than the moire thing was with the D70. Add to that that Nikon have already said they'll fix any bodies that exhibit the issue and all people are doing is denying themselves a month or two of good shots from a great camera.

Well, but I'm bring it back to Ritz Camera today, and might check out a D70s or a D50... Needing two camera for a wedding event very badly

Shooting in the studio and around the house I haven't seen any banding. Sure, I tested and found it at ISO 400 with massive overexposure and crazy contrast in the shot, but how many people need that sort of shooting ability? That, and the fact that it comes with a 1 year warranty. Nikon will sort it out.
I'm not saying there isn't an issue but calling folks crazy is a little extreme.

A widespread problem? Hardly.

The entire population of this forum is miniscule compared to all of those who have (or will) buy a D200. In other words, the number of people reporting "banding problems" on this forum is statistically insignificant, based on volume of units sold.

If you want a D200, buy one. Your chances of getting a "bad" one are no better or worse than buying a new DVD player, television, or any other consumer electronic device. And should you get one of the rare ones that is truly "bad", Nikon will remedy the problem under warranty.

...it's still backordered in B&H. Maybe you're the crazy one. Who knows? I, for sure, am tired of all this "my D200 has a problem" cr@p, although I knew it would happen (again, same as with any other new camera).

The low price is the problem. Too many people have access to too complicated equipment (me included, he, he)

Dioni
