E-10 and Snow [imgs]

You have no idea how much I despise snow!!!!

I do however, recognize a good photo when I see one!!! (or two, or three)

Very nice indeed.

Thosed are real nice Brent
Thanks!
I know what you mean about the color......or lack of it. Almost B&W
Yes! Except there is a certain - richness - that I can not seem to get in my noremal B&W conversions
There is also a real feeling of the midwest there......Or maybe I'm
talking without enough coffee, but there is a simplicity that you
just have to know to understand what the heck I'm talking about.
I think I know what you mean. You can see it in the driving styles - places like NJ and Chicago people expect you to know where you are going or "get out of the way" - Midwest and west are a bit more "He seems to be having trouble - let's give him room". Of course if you are taking about simple minded I couldn;t know what you meant ;-)
Thanks and thanks for the boot review;)
Boots - I want to find someone who knows about boots!

Thanks - You would think after taking pictures of snow all these years I would know what I am doing - but I still get a bit flumoxed about what the "proper" white & dark ratio should be. Thanks for the look and the encouragement.

Hope you are doing ok with the Holiday season. It was very hard for me after my parents left. Thinking about you and your family...

HAA no way.....I'm a midwestern boy! I just mean that it takes some exploration and a curious eye to see the beauty of the midwest if you come from a place such as the Rocky Mountains or Hawaii which are amazing! but take no real work to understand their universal appeal.

Keep it up.

PS What ya wanna know about boots? Being from MN I assume you tromp around in Redwings!

Nice stuff Brent - really like the falls ones too. I've just found where you are in the US and there are loads of lakes around your place! - no wonder you have plenty of nice water shots. I'm off to google earth it just to get another view

I grew up in Maine (Northern New England) and we had LOTS of snow from Halloween 'till April fools day most years.

Not at all unusuall to get 2 or more feet of the stuff overnight..

I just got "sick of it"

When its too deep to walk through with out snowshoes, and too cold out to build snowmen... it puts a "kink" in the fun.

Now I live in South East Connecticut, where we usually get rain when the rest of New England gets snow.. I still despise the little of it that we get.

Even though it makes for "pretty winter pictures" to me, Its just wet, white, slop!

Ah! That is very, very astute. When I was in the Olympic Peninsula everything was photogenic! Here - I have to look for favorite places.

Did you see that post 4-5 months back about the Lady in rural Pensylvania who took all her pictures w/i 10 miles from her home - very good stuff - simple - had that feeling of home, warm air and straightforward people.
Keep it up.

Actually LaCrosse. The problem is that I need a boot for walking and standing in the water up to my calves with as well as around in the snow. Rubber is not that great of a winter material (though Sorrels seem to work just fine). And leather starts leaking around the seams and tongue - even with Silicone seal. Of course no boot will help if you walk in water over the top or kneel down to get closer to that perfect ice formation... Even a tiny trickle of water into the boot starts to spoil the mood after an hour or so :-)

I don't recall that post......but you get my drift! How about something like this with a good mountaineering gaitor and some good Smart Wool socks! I bet you could stand up to your ankles all day in that combo.

OK time to go to work.

Have a great one!

Within 1/2 days drive there is such a diversity of water - Lake Superior, 3 rivers (Minnesota, Mississippi and the St. Croix) and this is the "Land of 10,000 Lakes"

I am still looking for that perfect place of falling water - the kind where you get mists and icicles and ice caves, etc. We have one kind of large falls (Minnihaha - but you almost have to go when it is below freezing to not get the hords of people). Niagra Falls must be amazing in the winter...

I envy your ability to get to the ocean - It is about 1700 miles to the Ocean from here and about 8-900 to get to the mountains. I guess we all have some "good stuff" around us :-)

Yes thousands - I had a look at google earth - there seem to be a nice group around Echo Bay etc. - I guess that's near you

Yes but you've got some excellent places already - we don't get snow that often but some reasonable frosts - I like the freezing fog for photography - no other reason! - especially as it clears leaving a hoar frost.

Ocean! - I'd hardly call the water around the UK the Ocean - I guess the SW/North of the UK is really what I'd call Ocean - big crashing waves etc. The rest of it is the sea - not as inviting as most places - but never the less hearing the waves crashing and the smell of the salty sea is really nice. Funny I live about 80 miles from the coast and I still think it's too far!

Brent,
A day late, sorry...
These are awesome captures. Excellent work.

I moved to Florida over 16 years ago and haven't seen snow, live, since then. While I miss it, I don't miss the hassles. Being able to view images like these brings me back to the days when I appreciated the beauty of the snow.

Today all I have is the beauty of 70° temps, clear blue skies, beaches, scantily clad young women... Very tedious!

Not quite sure how I missed these but it is truly a nice series. Your shots do send a sense of what it is like in the northern US right now, very well done. I am looking forward to our get together next month.

Did you do a custom WB I noticed from exif that you didn't add any exposure bias....you did a fine job manging the white of the snow (which BTW came out white) and the darkness of the water....great stuff my friend.

Oslo - are you getting snow yet?
Yes, we have had snow for some time now!
My Grandparents on my Mother's side came here from Finland. They
said Northern MN (150 miles from here) reminded them a lot of
Finland - which making a completely ignorant leap seems like it
might be a bit like Norway? At least you must be weathering
through the same short days and snow.
Quite right, only 6 hours of daylight. Part of Norway is a bit like MN. I have been there a few times, mostly St Paul, nice area, lots of people with Scandinavian background there I believe.
I'll have to peek at your galleries. Hey! you are still shooting
w/ an E-10 too ( I think I should know - I'm old and forget ).
Great stuff - your galleries. Is Tellemark near you? The
mountains look beautiful!
Telemark is about 200 km west of Oslo, the mountains are nice - and continue west, from 4000 to 6000 feet high, you can do walks in the summer and go skiing in winter. We have a small cabin up there and I enjoy taking pictures in the area.

Kind of like memories ... nice to remember but when it really comes down to it you don't want to go back there....

Ah yes. I eagerly await your entries into the challenge. I got pictures of pillows w/ legs (not face, kinda eyes running for warmth. Course it could be they were running to get away. I have to get more creative and find an indoor place that allows cameras and I can shoot pictures of people.

Bikinis. yes. You must be coming up on a new bout of tourists....

Hey Bill!

Thanks for the peek.

(Somewhat sheepishly) I have never set WB since I first got the camera, set the camera for WB forgot to reset it and ruined a whole day's shoot. Course now I probably could fix that, but the habit remains. I use spot metering to get around blowing the hiilites.

Sure has been a beautiful snow - hasn't it? Went to Minnihaha today. Since it was sooo cold there were some of the most amazing frost crystals near the bottom of the falls. The falls were frozen about 1/2 way up - pretty cool looking!
