I am new here, I have a Canon A70 digital camera. I raise and show miniature horses. I am thinking of getting a Canon SLR Rebel XT. I take a lot of pictures at the shows and want something to take more close-up shots and action shots. Would this be a good choice for me. I am a real novice about camera's, have read about them but really don't understand all the tech. info. Any suggestions or comments would be appriciated.

Well, DSLR is a good pick for its capability, for the speed and option to change lens for close up. How close are you planning to shot? You might want to buy close up lens for that. For action shot, I think DSLR is simply fast! :o)

On the other hand, I find DSLR is a bit complex, except the AUTO mode. You need to learn the details so you can get a great shot, coz I heard, if you're not really into it, then some compact can give you better result right away.

Just my 2cents

Walter1,

I looked up the A70 specs and it says that there are two macro modes available. The 'super macro' mode allows shots as near as 5 cm.
I just want to ask what sort of macro capability you need?

A DSLR will give you a choice of lenses among them a type called 'macro tele' lens. With these one can shoot details from some comfortable working distance, eg. 25 cm instead as from 5 cm.

To get the most from your DSLR shots you may have to shoot in RAW file format and do some post processing in photoshop afterwards.

Have a look at the Sony R1 that has been tested on this website by Phil. It may be an alternative of some interest to you rather than go all the way to DSLR.

If you get an XT, investigate custom function 4. It allows you to move the focus control off the shutter button and onto the asterisk button, so you completely eliminate shutter lag. When you press the button, the shutter trips. No delay. Takes some practice, but most pros who shoot action do this.

Also, plan on reading the manual about 5 times, practicing diligently, and maybe taking a class. If you buy locally, see if the camera shop will throw in enrollment in a class, or maybe they offer one. Ritz did some years ago when we bought an S45 and G3 from them.

This space reserved for a clever phrase, as soon as I find one that hasn't already been taken.
