First LX1 Photos!

Bjorn, the canal scene is a remarkably good picture! Not only is it
outstanding from a compositional viewpoint, the exposure could not
have been better. I am impressed at the way the LX1 is handling the
contrast in that shot...looks as if it could be as much as a 3-stop
range.
Thanks. It is amazing what kind of compositions are possible when you couple a wide aspect with a wide angle lens. Yes, the accuracy of the exposure metering is remarkable. I thought that the sunlit white house would be overexposed, and checked the histogram right after taking the photo. To my surprise, it wasn't overexposed. I'll know more after I've subjected the LX1 to various lighting conditions...
Someone else on this board keeps saying how much the results from
the LX1 look like slides from the older film Leicas. Yours add
credence to his argument.
Can you attempt to describe what the photo quality from the older Leicas is like?

Cograts Bjorn, you did it. Not only you bought this wonderful fun camera, you got some wonderful pics in you gallery as well. It feels so good when you like a camera - better than liking a book, or a movie, or a tv, or a computer, or a ..................
Keep sharing.

Also, I forgot to mention.. I did some tests myself at ISO200.
Nothing I care to post just yet, but I think if you leave the NR on
STND you get a better result for the companion jpegs. Set on HIGH
you get that "water color" NR effect people complain or, and if
you're on LOW you see too much of the jpeg artifact. STND seems
about right. And, if you shoot RAW ISO200, kick your luminance and
color noise reduction up to around 80-90 percent, sharpening to
zero, in ACR 3.2, then smart sharpen (CS2) afterword in PS, you get
a VERY usable ISO200 image.
You are revealing some of your secrets! I will also be doing some tests once I have acquired the appropriate software...

Thanks a lot, Aftab. I bought the LX1 after looking at the photos you and others posted. While some commented on the "unacceptable" noise levels, I was thinking "what beautiful, understated image quality." I really wish I had had this terrific camera (instead of an FZ5 - which I sold to get the LX1) during my New Zealand trip.

Fill in the blank, eh? I have to watch that last one!

Excellent shots!

Congradulations on the new camera!

I have been really enjoying the 16X9 world!

Thanks Joan. I have been watching your superb galleries. Quite a few of the photos are beautifully composed and are very original. I am also enjoying the "16:9 world." Do you also have a Leica D-LUX2, the "cousin" of the LX1?

Nice pics, maybe slightly bigger about 800 wide then we could see them better... looks like your going to like this camera

Sounds like you're enjoying your LX1 a lot. I'm enjoying mine too ...
I only capture in RAW mode, have yet to apply noise reduction processing:

Thanks Heath. Yes, I already like this camera. It is not always easy to find something which suits your own personal style of photography. As to the size of the images posted in this forum, I'm always a little hesitant to post images that are too large, having experience with what it is like to have a slow internet connection. In any case the full size 3840 x 2160 pixel images are available at:

What a surprise it was sunny today! So I went out and took quite a few photos with my LX1. I posted an ISO series of the same scene with the camera mounted on a tripod. Once again, these are full size original files, directly out of the camera.

You're gonna make a lot of pixel peepers happy with that series.
They'll love getting to play with the images on their own computer.
Yes, I suspect your right. But then again, I downloaded quite a few images myself before deciding on an LX1.

Did I mention how much I like the wide angle!

Ah, Joan...you surfaced finally! May I share one of your LX1 shots with the world? Hearing no objections, I shall proceed...

This is a FINE picture from your pBase site I discovered a few days ago. I think it expresses perfectly what was said earlier in this post about the "understated" refinement of the LX1's images.

This is just spot-on as far as I'm concerned...from Whitehall in London:

Thanks!

I really have been impressed wtih with LX1 and Dlux2 series. Basically, it is the camera that I take for travel and every day use. I have blown pictures up to 16X20 - very impressed with their quality.

The only problem I had is missadventures -

I dropped the Fx7 from 4 feet - it was dead on arrival.

The LX1 was on a tripod and knocked over the 2 year old black lab. Very bummed, but I got a good deal of Dlux2 - essentially the same camera.

So those who doubt - try it out. I am convinced!

Here is the culprit - Java, guilty but a very sweet dog!

Well Joan, he does have a guilty look. But that would explain why some of your newest PBase photos were taken by a Leica Dlux 2. I really enjoy your galleries.

Impressive shots! Natural but rich colors!
It looks you are getting the best out of this camera ! Congats!

I would like to know how portable is LX1. In other words the protruding lense worries me ! Can it be carrried in the shirt pocket?

Thanks! I am very pleased with this little camera. The colours are indeed natuaral looking and contrast and sharpening are also understated - just how I like it.

Well, the total thickness of the camera with the lens cap on is just shy of 50mm. The size and its weight of 220g make the camera just a little too large and heavy for a shirt pocket - in my opinion. It is nonetheless still quite a small camera, just more ideal for a coat pocket (although I doubt you need to wear coats that often in Chennai). I usually wear the camera, protected in a Lowepro D-Res 8 case, on my belt. Sometimes I also wear the case strapped around my shoulders.
