Hi all have just bought an S2 to upgrade from my S7000.

I need a few pointers on lenses ; I will have about £220 to spend and I normally shoot Landscapes and Candid people shots with a bit of Macro thrown in for variety. No fast sports stuff.
Any advice on what to buy would be gratefully received.
Thks Joe.

wow thats a tough one. most people use a dedicated macro lens. trying to do both with one lens and for cheap is difficult.

sigma 24-135 -2.8/4 - not real good for macro - 240 pounds
28-70 - 2.8 - limited macro - 230pounds
28-105 - 2.8/4 - not another macro lens - 190 pounds
the next ones are real cheap and the quality may not be there.
tamron 28-105 4-5.6 - slow 120 pounds
sigma 28-135 - 3.8/5.6 - slow 110 pounds
sigma 28-105 - 3.8/5.6 - slow 100 pounds

the prices are from jessops. i dont know if shopping in the us will save you any.

Hi Joe,

The Nikkor 28-105D has a macro facility and is a really useful lens for what you seem to want to cover.

Not sure where in the UK you are, but if you were/are in West Yorkshire you would be very welcome to try mine.

Gents , Thanks for your replies. I know it's a hard job on a limited budget to cover all bases especially when I have no idea about the cheaper lenses usefulness/quality.
I'll think on your suggestions though.

Kevin , thanks for your kind offer ; unfortunately i'm in Scotland ! Both of my parents were born under the White Rose and my Dad insisted I was christened there on the off chance I was any good at wielding the willow.

Joe

Congrats on choosing one fine camera.

Here is another vote for Nikon's 28-105. As a take-everywhere lens
for the S2, it is just about perfect. Great image quality, fairly compact,
under 1 lb and great value for the price . . . Plus a very nice macro
function which yields extraordinary macro shots. The 28-105 will give
you nice portraits and good landscapes.

Be aware that it is not a "low-light" lens but the S2's high ISO shots
( say at 800 or 1600 ) are very good, and compensate for the fact
that the 28-105 is f/3.5. That f/3.5 is still good when compared with
some other zooms at f/4.5. Lower f/ numbers mean that a lens has
a bigger minimum aperture, thus letting in more light for any given
shot, resulting in more sharpness and clarity in lower light shots.

The 28-105 operates well with the S2 flash, but for best flash results
with the S2 in the future ( when more cash is available :-) you may
wish to consider an external flash . . .

In your position, this zoom will probably give you better flexibility in
your early days with the S2, compared with a fixed length lens like
the 50mm.

In any other circumstance, I would say buy the less expensive Nikon
50mm f/1.8 for about 60 UKL. This lens would create better portraits
and higher-quality low-light images, but does not have the versatility
of the 28-105 zoom.

Good luck !

A lens you might consider is the 35-70mm f2.8, although somewhat limited in focal range, this lens will give you nicer (sharper, better color) images than the above mentioned lenses and it has a macro function,it is a pro quality lens and not expensive.

The 35-70mm f2.8 combined with your S-2 will give you outstanding image quality, the composition and artistry is up to you.

Best regards

Hi Joe, congrats on your S2. I have the S7000, which I bought to have a 2nd Fuji camera to my S2 before the S3 was available. If the range of the zoom on the S7000 worked for you, I would strongly reccomend the Tamron SP 24-135 lens for the S2. It will give you basicly the same coverage, equiv. to 36-202 mm. It has been my most-used, walk-around, do everything lens for 2+ yrs on my S2 and S3. If you do land

scapes, there is a huge difference between the coverage with a lens starting at 24mm and a lens starting at 28mm. which I find not wide enough for most landscapes.
Hope this helps, and enjoy the S2. It is an awsome camera.

Hi there, congrats on your new camera. the sigma 28-70 EX DF represents a good deal if your budget is tight. http://www.warehouseexpress.com still have some of the older model left at £214.99. It can be distinguished from the newer model by its 77mm filter thread as opposed to the newer models 67mm thread. I still use this lense on my S3 for past 12 months and for 2years + on my S2 before that. I use it as a general walkabout lense that includes landscapes and candid people stuff, it does not have a macro mode but can focus into about 10 " throughout the zoom range.
