dpreview 5D reviewed (Not KM 5D!!!???)

Good to see you comment on this.

I think you have a rough job (don't know if DPReview is your sole job, or if you have a 9-5 too). There is a lot of cameras and everyone seams to think that their favorite is in most need of a review. Sure would be tough. Also along with your ability to review being dependent on camera makers getting you cameras.

You do a good job, I enjoyed your 5D review very much.

Now, when the 9D comes, you better be on top of that :) We expect no less then a C 5D vs KM 9D full frame shoot out, with maybe the D200 in there for fun, or what ever Nikon comes out with in that class.

We can only hope there is a giant wooden crate in the corner of your place marked "from Minolta" packed full of 7DII and 9Ds and a ton of new G lenses with a note "do not talk about till feb 06, enjoy"

Did I say that? Or did you wish to read it so that you could create a poor image of me? The KM 5D is currently equal on my list with the DSC-R1, the only difference is that I have HALF the review of the R1 finished already. I will be working on both reviews but am likely to post the R1 first simply because it's more complete.

To be brutal it's my site and I make the calls.
However, I just feel disappointed since your reply imlpies that
there is such a lack of interest in the KM 5D that you might as
well just to ignore it for the time being. For the market I am
coming into (i.e. entry or maybe just above) the KM 5D looks like
the most attractive camera out of all its competitors (350D and
Nikon 750/70/70S etc) and I know of many others who feel the same
way.

I appreciate reviews take time to complete and you need to look to
prioritise from a business perspective, but I don't think you
should under-estimate the level of interest in the KM5D - in my
opinion it is huge. And remember, this is coming from someone with
no brand loyalty......as yet!

Looking forward to reading your review in the not too distant future!

Phil - certainly don't want to create a bad image of you - I think your reviews are excellent, probably better than anywhere else I have seen and I always give great reliance on them.

I did say that your response "implied" that interpretation, but by your reponse to my post, it seems that may not be right. Thanks for the clarification and keep up the great work.

Also, from reading your other posts in this thread, it seems that the fact we have not yet have had a review may also have something to do with KM not supplying you with a camera as soon as possible after announcement/release, so perhaps KM also need to sort themselves out a bit from a marketing perspective.

Hey, good to know. Glad to see it pays the bills then.

My concern was if it wasn't your full time job, then people moaning about reviews not coming out fast is even more misplaced.

Again, I appreciate the work you put into this place.

That it hasn't been reviewed already. But, it seems like it was a low priority on a lot of sites. In fact I think it has been the slowest camera to hit the reviews of any DSLR I can remember, and I'm not sure why? It has been a long time since Letsgodigital came out with that first review or should I say preview. There was a tremendous gap between their's and any other review site. It's almost as if Minolta withheld the camera, from review sites, for a time.

I'm suprised there hasn't been more on this camera.

It clearly also plays a part if you get a camera from the company to review. ;^)

This is where I feel KM are way behind the ball. I have a KM 5D, and I like it a lot; since the lenses are so cheap, I may or may not stick with the brand when the time comes to upgrade DSLR. And if KM won't send cameras to places like dpreview, it'll be that much harder to decide to get a KM next time.

I'm also getting increasingly frustrated with the lateness of getting cameras to us, we often get them AFTER they hit the shelves, which can of course only raise eyebrows.

It's funny 'reviews' have already appeared in traditional paper media, which usually require 2-3 months between writing and publishing. Perhaps KM is underestimating the impact of review-sites such as dpreview.com (or are we overestating the power of the internet????).

Good grief people. Some folks'll say the rudest things without any provocation.

On behalf of humanity I apologize Phil. We really appreciate this site. Thank you.

Anyone who can't understand why Canon's 5D got reviewed quicker than KMs...well...I won't say more so I don't end up joining the rude crowd.

And I love all the demands that people make as they sit at home and soak in the totally free service you provide.

Phil, I demand that you don't review any more...uh...let's say...Nikon cameras because I'm personally offended by them. Oh, and I demand that you start reviewing toaster ovens as well. I mean, how dare you prioritize toaster ovens below Nikon cameras?!?!? And what is up with all the black in your website? :)

Whatever.

Really people. Come on.

...for a timely post. It's not like Phil is some kind of elected politician who has made a lot of promises to the users of DPReview to be where he is today. If I was to pay for all the info I have read on this site using the same rate as for a paper magazine I would have a huge bill sitting on my fridge right now... But, it's free, and that is something we all surely appreciate. And I am sure Phil appreciates feedback from his readers, but I can only imagine what a rude post must do to you after spending long hours of tedious work providing the best reviews out there.... for free.

"Correct, I prioritize the cameras which are generating the most interest, are being discussed the most and which I have the most work complete on. You'd have to be wearing KM branded blinkers not to see how much interest there has been over the EOS 5D, and the DSC-R1 which is likely to be my next review."

I don't blame you at all and very well understood the games: market, timing, interests readers and from the manufactures as well.

this is my first DSRL for me and bought it w/o your very informative review. I found it has weeknesses and strengths( many) so I hope you will have time to post this camera review for people to see there is an alternative to choose and support the competitions.

I am a bit surprised the E500 but now understood that you had the e500 way before the 5D.
thanks for your reviews.

Sigh?

After your 7D review, I thought you replaced your Glass House with one made of Stone.

Guess not ...

LOL

Just to run with some thought brought up by others though, Canon being the biggest consumer camera maker out there, is obviously going to have tremendous interest to their product, and obviously a Full-Frame, "affordable" DSLR is going to be the one with the highest buzz. I mean just look at even dpreview's own most viewed camera, EOS 350D is still on top almost everyday. But that also trigger some other thought. Prioritizing according to the interest generated obvious is giving people what they want, but this at the same time is also throwing the "othe brand" into a vicous cycle as even their new product came out no one will know about it because they don't have the buzz-worthy-ness of say, Canon, and then media chose to cover the more buzz-worthy brand and the lesser brand become lesser still. KM and their incapable marketing department once again player a part in this(reminds me of Philips really, an innovator if there ever was one, pretty much the pioneer in the optical media, yet it was their marketing partner, um, Sony that's enjoying much of the success....). I don't know if that "most viewed" list plays a part in the prioritizing process, but in my mind when I see 350D on top for a while, I might want to bring its competitor into limelight as well, just so that people are interested in it can see its alternative. E-500 is one, and Maxxum 5D can be another and maybe bring those less buzz-worthy brand some buzz as well. Just my 2 cents.

Anyhow though, keep up the good work, the site is still THE authority IMO on digital camera online.
