Hi, hoping someone can help.
I have a Fuji Finepix S602 Zoom. I have had it for about 15 months.

A couple of months ago we noticed several black spots on the lcd screen, but we put up with it becasue we figured it was just breaking down, and we could still take photos ok.

We have gone to use it today for the 1st time for a few weeks. The right hand side of the screen is completely black, half the screen, and very neatly. I initially thought this was the whole screen/lense (whatever it is) breaking down. However I had a bit of a play and noticed the following:

When the dial is set to 'set' and is on the green arrow, if i then press the zoom silver buttons the ok part of the screen expands and subsequently the black half disappears. This tells me that the lcd screen is fine. However, as soon as you exit this, the half back screen comes back, and it does come out in the photos as well. Also, if you go back to 'set' and 'green arrow' the black screen has come back again and you have to press the zoom buttons again to get a full screen. Can anybody help? Thanks.

Sounds like a few loose wires or broken solder joints somewhere. I Don't quite understand what you mean, is the picture half-black as well? In that case the CCD is probably loose/FUBAR. Do you live in a humid place? There could be corosion somewhere in there...

What "green arrow"? I don't understand what you mean, and I've had three s602s...

Well the first thing you should do is remove the batteries for the night, insert fresh batteries in the morning, reset the camera to its factory parameters and see whether that could help. It could be a simple glitch like that, happens.

If that doesn't help it would be time to check wire connections, whcih means opening the camera, and some of the connectors are quite delicate. But it's quite feasible if you have the least amount of dexterity, staedy hands and are prudent and don't force things. Wires do have a tendency to get loose in time, it's happened a few times before. Setting back slightly offset or loose wires is very often enough to fix the problem.

If THAT didn't help (but I'm overextending myself here), the symptoms you describe could well be caused by a failed motherboard, but that's just a very far fetched supposition. Try the simpler things first, it's quite possible that will solve your problem.

Good luck, and if you ned to take the camera apart, JKirk's s602 pages are invaluable for dismantling help: http://www.digsys.com.au/S602Z/S602Z.html

Sorry, I dont have it in front of me at the moment, but i mean the main on/off switch, you know you have the red camera pic when you take a photo and the green arrow when you are previewing, on one of the dials on top of the camera.

Well Yes, its in the basement of my mum and dads house most of the time. And we havent been using it very much lately.

Yes, unfotunately the warranty has just expired. Not sure whether to repair it or not, as it has those black spots anyway, which I dont think can be repiared. Thanks.

Thanks everyone for your responses, so if I dont want to spend more than £150, whats the next camera I should get? (sorry, I know thats a very general question and I should do some research myself!).

This sounds like the same problem that Saiko is having (different interpretation). Check the "Problem with S7000" thread for my opinion there. I feel you may be in the SAME boat. Try that suggestion first aned let us know how it goes. Can yoiu post an example of the fault, it will help a lot.

I went to that posting you put up on the s7000 but Im not sure what i should do, sounds like its stuffed to me! :(

Forgot to say, the camera is at my dads at the mo so i cant post a pic, but it is litterally half black, and half picture. whats weird is that when you are in preview and you press zoom, the pic expands and the black bit goes, which means the actual lcd is ok. ho hum, but it always goes back.

I have the same problem, on my camera 80% of the frame is black whatever you do.

I had this camera for about 18 months and have not used it much.

I am still not sure whether it is feasible to pay Fuji £130 to repair it

well guys, you just need to remove the back and wiggle / unplug / replug connectors / ribbon cables. These account for 70% of ALL faults at least, so its worth a try. Its an easy and quick test.
