sigma 70-300 lens identification

How does sigma add their red rings?

the lens has a narrow groove and the red ring appears to be a very (very!) thin strip of red tape-like material applied perfectly in the narrow groove, like it belongs there.

if sigma's rings are normally painted on or silkscreened or somesuch, then this would be an obvious fake. but if they normally use a narrow "tape strip" type material, then hmm...

Hmmm... I must admit that I have never seen anything like this. All Sigma lenses I have seen are either marked as "Made in Japan" or no country mentioned. It might be a European version but I did not know that Sigma has a European factory.

DL & APO lenses looked exactly the same excepting the ring and the markings. It is much more difficult to change the markings and why anybody would like to downgrade the lens markings ? It is more likely that the red ring was fixed on a DL lens.

Sorry. After a proper look at the image, I guess that you have a filter on the lens and the filter is made in Germany, not the lens. Did you buy it new ? I have not seen a LDO model of this lens before.

the response from Sigma:

Dear Nick

Thank you for your inquiry. Your lens was probably manufactured between
about 2000 and 2003. It may have been made with and without a red ring
(product changes may be made without notice). It is a conventional
achromatic type lens, with one SLD glass element. We hope this information
is helpful to you.

Sincerely
SCA-
