I've followed dpreview for a couple of years now. Post very little but still learn alot from everyone here. So, I own a Pentax Optio 33wr (3.2mp). I want to purchase either the FZ20 or FZ30. Inspite of the FZ30 noise, with no other digicam expierence, would I be just a happy with the 30 or the should I get the FZ20? I know, I know, you can only give me an opinion but I'd still like to hear what think.

Farrell - I owned (still do) an FZ20 and liked it a lot. I now have bought an FZ30 and like it a WHOLE LOT MORE! Nothing against the FZ20 but there are many improvements to the FZ30 and I use most of them. It is really a good camera.

I have to second what Wayne said here. I have used the fz20 for over 40,000 shots. But the fz30 is as sweet as it gets and I am enjoying it immensely. And btw, I don't think the fz30 has any more noise than the fz20. Actually I have less noise in my pure blue skies than I did with the fz20. Both are fine cameras and take great photos. I have to recommend the fz30.

I just got an FZ30 but have no experience with the FZ20 or earlier models - I defected from the Nikon forum - but I will tell you the reasons I waited for the FZ30 instead of buying the FZ20 a month ago:
  • Manual zoom ring
  • Better shutter button position
  • Flip and twist LCD (a favorite Nikon feature)
  • Faster focus, faster EVF
  • Non-extending lens with 55mm threads, easier to add filters etc.
All IMHO, of course. Play with them both (if you can find them) and see what you like.
