D70s or 20D

Hi,

I considered to buy one of these semi-professional cameras and am more for the D70s; that's why I ask my question in the Nikon thread.

I'm still not shure if it is worth to spend more money for the Canon that comes along with a quite crappy lens.

Photographing is my hobby but not my profession, so I just want to know about image quality if it is equal comparing the results of both cameras?

Thanx.

Andreas

I'm a Nikon, and Olympus E-1 shooter, and was looking for "around 8 mpx"...tried a brand new 20D with 17-40L glass. At the long end I had out of focus (I use only the center point, and SAF.) I am a 30 year shooter, and not "new" to cameras. I was just disappointed enough I took the whole thing back and got the D70s with 17-55 Nikkor. The shots are nice, have an "organic" quality to them, and are in focus every time. The noise reduction is not applied as much in camera as the D50, but I seldom go over 400ISO or so. I just never have any "performance" issues with my Nikon stuff...nor do I with the Oly kit. I have a couple of friends that shoot a 20D and their stuff is very nice...I just didn't want to "do the dance" as some told me on these forums...to send it in to Canon and have everything "calibrated". This is just my 2 cents worth....

Thanks for quick answer!

Now bringing up the D50... you won't say the D50 is close to the image quality of the 70s?

When looking at the prices for the Nikon kits I'm wondering if these cameras are really all the same! I mean I can get the body and lens for 1100,- € in a local store and I can order it on the net for 950,- ! Are there any differences so that you would say Nikon sells A B or C qualities i.e. hot pixel or dust on the sensor?

Anyone else wants to answer the original question?

Thanks

Andreas

I dont think there is any way to deny that. It also costs more, 40% more than the the D70s (body only) and almost double that of the D50.

For the extra bucks over the D70s, the 20D offers:

ISO100 and ISO3200
Better noise performance at ISO 800 and 1600
Mirror lockup
8 MP over 6MP
5fps over 3fps
Better viewfinder

The D70s offers these advantages:
Better AF accuracy (Canon's AF is dodgy, no matter what their fanboys say)
Better flash system
Better interface/ergonomics

As an aside, the best deal right now is the D50 body only. $650 for a camera that will rip the pants off of any pretender from the prosumer P&S world. lol.

I know that this does not answer your question, but the Nikon D200 is not far away.

Nikon applied for a trademark on the name in the beginning of July. Judging on past history, there is a reasonable chance that the announcement will be made around November.

It's going to be a 20D killer ...

Either camera will take fine photos in capable hands. If there is a feature that you must have there are some differences as listed above. They also have different ergonomics and you should get them both in your hands before you chose. You don’t have to purchase the kit lens so don’t count that in you decision. It was a toss up for me and I was about to purchase the 20D when I discovered that I could not see the exposure data in the viewfinder of the 20D. That was the deal breaker for me and I’m very happy with my D70s.

I've been impressed in how well the D70 does in low light focusing.

having said that if I were to get another camera today I would most likey get a Canon 20D... only becasuse I was not too impressed with the D2X high iso shots.

But then again thats another camera system which means another set of lenses which costs more...

I've just bought a D70 (older model) 2 days ago after considering all of the prosumer DSLRs around. A good friend has a 20D I've used a few times & I've been very impressed with its performance. At the same price I probably would have gone for a 20D but I saved about US$750 in choosing the D70 & that differential isn't justified imho. As others have posted, both are great cameras but even at the big price difference, the D70/s has some features that leave the 20D behind.

It's still very early days for me yet but my 1st impression is that the D70 is much easier to use, especially for somebody with limited DSLR experience like me.

I did more research than I would care to admit . I wrote post that might help you. just click on my profile.

Thanks to all of you !! I think my decision is quite clear now! As I don't feel like waiting for November when Canon will propably announcing its new camera just to wait another half year until prices for the 20d will sink, I will buy a Nikon D70s.

I think this camera is quite sufficient for me; I hold it with the "proverb": It's the photographers business to take the picture, not the cameras one".

Still, I would really like to know if there are any differences between the D70s considering the price!

Thanks again.

I think that you won't be dissapointed. Had both cams a month in my possesion before i made the descision.
