Can anyone point me to a good camera store in London? I'm looking to buy a tripod, but I've found that most of the stores in London are so small that they don't carry much stock.

Thanks!

It seems that many bricks and mortar outlets can't compete with online stores; which means we'll lose them. Which is also a shame because it makes things difficult if you want to handle the stuff before you buy.

Kingsley Photographic - stock a ton of photographic equipment.
93 Tottenham Court Road, W1T 4HL, Tel: 020 7387 6500

They're actually Nikon main dealers, but don't let that put you off. They were very friendly and helpful to me.

Any others in Midlands UK? Owners club possibly starting.

Another rcommendation for Kingsley - I've only dealt with them twice but thought they were very professional.

Also consider Calumet in Drummond St near Euston. They're a pro dealer and are now open all day Saturday.

Hi, this is a copy of a reply I gave someone else regarding finding filters, but it's equally useful re tripods:

I've often used CameraWorld in Wells St. (just off Oxford St.) and they usually have a good selection. Visit their website first...

There's also Calumet (Drummond St near Euston Station and also Wardour St) who can be good, but pricey. Visit http://www.calumetphoto.com

However, you'll have a good chance of getting what you want in the 2 or 3 good photographic shops on Tottenham Court Road, near the Warren St. tube end. These shops are Kingsleys ( http://www.kingsleyphoto.co.uk ), Spectrum 020 7388 3535 (almost next door to Warren St tube) and West End Cameras ( http://www.westendcameras.com )

You could also try Nicholas (excellent shop) on Camden High St (near Mornington Crescent tube) tel. 020 7916 7251.

As for Jessops and Jacobs (that the previous poster mentioned), I've found Jessops to be pretty useless for me - they've never had anything that I've wanted in stock - whereas Jacobs can be a bit better.

Jacobs is opposite Jessops in New Oxford Street and I know it has a good selection of tripods.

You might try phoning the shops first to save a wasted trip.

Good luck!

Ancient thread, but Google likes it - sadly Kingsleys closed abruptly in March 2011, gone the way of the dodo, quadraphonic stereo, and indeed the 35mm film camera. Which is what they sold. But they didn't sell enough, apparently. Gone the way of Joe's Basement, remember them?

The other shops in the thread still seem to be open, though.

These days Park Cameras in Sussex have the London stores beaten for range and prices IMHO
Calumet is still going strong

The big Jessops near Tottenham Court Rd is as well, though the 2nd hand stuff is long gone
Across the Rd from them is Jacobs which has a good range of bags as well
For end of line camera deals, Currys has been my number one store lately

What I have found now with one Tottenham Court store whose name I forget is that their Amazon price is way less than their store price so its Amazon all the way now if I buy from them.
