I realize this is offtopic a bit, but hoping for help anyways.

I've always wondered how to do a regular, 1 pixel wide line in photoshop - can anyone tell me?

The problem is, that when I try to do a 1px all black line, photoshop instead makes it a 2 pixel line, composed of a 1px dark grey line and a 1px grey line :(

For a straight line I use the brush tool. Click on the first point then move to the next point and shift+ click.

If your using the line tool and getting a funky looking line, try checking "Fill Pixels" third icon from the left in the options bar. You can then use the foreground color to make it any color you like.

Man that's clever thanks :D
Saves a bunch of time on the task I'm working on.

Still'd like to know how to do a regular line though, for the times when I need to do a completely horizontal line (line tool, holding down shift), so if anyone knows...

For clean smooth one pixel horizontal or vertical lines, you can also use the "Single row or single column marquee tool" located within the marquee tool in the toolbox. Fill using the paint bucket or Edit> Fill.
