To put it in perspective, the retail price in Sweden is lately (before your hurricane) at around 11:- per liter, which comes out to around $5.5 per gallon. Even before the hikes lately, the normal price has been at about $5 per gallon. In japan it's at around 130 yen per liter, or about $4.5 per gallon. People manage that price level, and have for years. I'm quite sure the price surge hurts, but it's not cause for panic.

Nice picture. Great color.

You could sell your car! I did 2 months ago and I'm loving every minute. Although I know it's not practical for most. I live in San Francisco where it's feasible. Plus SF has CityCareShare. But I used to live in Detroit where Public Trans was a JOKE.

PS, It's over $3.00 in SF -- seen it as high as $3.18 for 86 Octane.

Our minmum wage is $5.15 per hour, there's not a whole lot of jobs around here and the ecomony is very bad. I think you have to factor in your economy also. At $3 - 4 dollars a gallon it will put an even harder hurt on this area.

Yes, you need to take that into account. I believe the median and average incomes are higher in the US than in Sweden (our right-wing parties tend to shout that quite loudly), but the minimum income (whether work or social services) is higher in Sweden (they are conspiciously silent about that part).

I suspect income in general is higher in Japan, but then, so is the cost of living as well.

Actually the price of gasoline is the same worldwide. It is the excessive tax rates of most countries that make up the majority of the price. €1.30 a liter equates to $6.03 a gallon, which is 2x the price of gasoline in America. The extra $3/gallon or €0.64/liter that you are paying is the result of taxes from Rome and Brussles.
In Rome it is over 1.30 euro , and in Greece almost the same .
Americans have been blessed with low petrol prices and high
standard of living for decades now .

lol. Its funny reading this. Its about time the US caught up to the rest of the world. In Sydney, Australia at the moment we are paying $1.30 a Litre. There is 4.546 Gallons to the Litre. So 4.546 * 1.30 = $5.9098 AUS per gallon.

Convert that to US 5.90 * .80 = 4.72 USD. per Gallon.

And you think 2.99 is expensive. Thats our normal price and we are self sufficient in oil production.

We can only be thankful the AU govt has stopped indexing tax on petrol to its retail price, otherwise we'd be paying $AU1.60 a litre already...

We pay 38c a litre in tax at the moment.

But, I'm still not complaining (Although I am questioning the wife's decision to purchase a 4x4), I've seen the price of petrol in England.

yikes.

Here in Poland we have gas for 4.25 PLN for a liter, which means... $4.85 per gallon. Do not complain anymore!

By the way - I spend my vacation in Turkey - they have even more expensive gas - about $8 per gallon!

Here in Poland we have much lower average (and minimum) income than in USA or Sweden. And as I said, we have gas for $4.85 per gallon.
Turkey - about $8 per gallon.
Income has nothing to do with that.

Hi there,

Very interesting reading.

OK in New Zealand we pay $1.50 NZD a litre so that is about (1.50 3.79 =$5.685) a gallon

Now that is about $3.955 USD a gallon..... oh just hold on the price has gone up again, It is now $1.55 NZD a litre. Oh I must get on my bike more.

Chris

we are being hammered on fuel prices.

I paid last night 93.3p/litre = £4.27 per Gallon = $7.70 per Gallon

I know prices will vary even here, I am in the South East counties & that the earnings plus 'cost of living' varies across the globe but you guys have had cheap fuel for so long that we here can only whistle for!
