I just bought an Epson 870. When pulling up information on the printer from the print driver, I noticed the cartridges are listed as "Standard". Question:

Are there any High Capacity Cartridges and if so does anyone know when they will become available?

I went to the Epson web site to post the question and couldn't find where to post it - manual says to fill out fill on support.epson.com under troubleshooting tab but there were no forms to fill out there as stated in the manual.

Thanks

Let me kow what you find out 'cause I am dissappointed in the ink comsumption. Everyone on this forum said you will get only 10 or so 8x10's on the 870 color cartridges and be happy with that, Well I am not. I got more than that on my Epson 850. I am keeping the 850 just for prints for friends that don't care about longivity. Comments e-mail me. [email protected] Sorry that I am so unhappy about my new 870, but I take lots of photos and with lots of money in my difital camera.

Epson said this is a great photo printer, but never indicated the cost of the ink cartridges and the limited quantity you would get form a cartridge on this new 5 color cartridge.

I may be kicked offf this forum, but I am voicing my opinion. And isin't that what this forum is all about?

Maria:

I have not had as bad an experience as you. I have gone through the 4 matte sheets 8.5X11 provided, 1 Premium Glossy 8.5X11, 5 4X6 roll prints on Premium Glossy, 2 4X6 Epson Photo Perforated, and > 10 Epson Photo paper 8.5X11 with 1/4 of the color cartridge left as indicated (roughly equivalent of 17 8X10s). I am getting what I believe to be acceptable color cartridge life but will wait until I have gone through several before I know for sure.

I have an HP2000C in addition which is pretty miserly but the cartridges cost $25/ea and there are 4 of them. At present I would guess the 870 is comparable in cost/page (this is unscientific at present - an educated guess). I am more interested in extended life between changes but with the inexpensive cost of the cartridges this isn't much of an issue.

I have not experimented with changing the resolution. I have used primarily the Photoenhanced setting with Digital Camera checked and the People or Nature setting with the appropriate paper setting.

If I get an answer, I will let you know. Until then, hang in there.

I was suprised (shocked) how quickly the levels dropped when I first used the printer. However, I now suspect the on-screen indicator may not be accurate. I have now printed the entire sample roll of premium glossy 4x6s (and am trying to find more), the 2 perforated 4x6s, at least eight or nine 8x10s (a mix of glossy and matte), a several other formats (a sheet of stickers, a sheet of business cards, etc.), and the indicator still shows 1/4 of the color catridge left. The rate of consumption, as shown by the indicator, slowed markedly when it reached the 1/2 point.

Kind of reminds me of the gas guage in my car.

Gary, et.al.
I understand your frustation at the seemingly high ink consumption of the new printers. I have read that initially, most of the ink goes to some sort of reservoir and that subsequent cartridges will fare much better. I am waiting on my 1270. Should receive by Friday but I have the 1200 and ink consumption (printing at 720 dpi) is pretty darn good. I get about 25 pages or so. I would expect similar results from the 1270. I am going to ignore the first cartridge consumption and concentrate on the second before I form an opinion. Please keep us posted on the second cartridge life span.

Thanks,

Ron

Hi Gary,

I was speaking to a Epson customer service rep today, and was told that
there is currently only 1 size ink cartridge that will fit the 870
Oh well... can't have everything I guess
