How do you view S2 video clips on a DVD player?

Say I have 650mb of S2 videos clips. Can I burn those video files to a CD-R/RW and view them in my DVD player or is there more to it than that?

Please explain. Thanks...

Debbie,

The videos recorded on an S2 are in AVI/Motion JPEG format. On a computer these videos can be viewed using Windows Media Player, QuickTime (for Windows or Mac), RealPlayer, etc.. If you burned a video in this format onto a DVD, it would NOT be viewable on a DVD player. DVD videos are in MPEG2 format (video compression format), which a completely different video format.

The only way you'd be able to burn a DVD that can be viewed on a DVD player would be to convert it to MPEG2 format. That could be done (not easily) by playing the video (converting it back to an analog signal) and redigitizing it into MPEG2 format. That would require an A/D converter (like the Dazzle) connected to your computer, or a DVD recorder. Of course, this would produce some image degradation since the digitized image would have to be converted to analog and then back to digital.

AFAIK there are no direct AVI to MPEG2 converters.

As you can see this is not a simple matter. The easiest way to view these videos on a TV is to use the camera itself to output a NTSC signal directly to the TV.

Maybe others have different suggestions.

Good luck.

Cheers,

What? It's very easy to convert the MJPEG-files from the camera to MPEG-2 files suitable for burning to a DVD. There's a lot of software for such a task, and I'm sure many DVD burning programs has the ability to do this built in. And then it's just a matter of dragging and dropping the files you need.

I have a Sony DVD burner that came with Nero 6. It creates DVDs that play on a TV from just about any type of video format, including movies taken by your Canon.

I use Windows Movie Maker to put together the clips, and burn them to DVD with Nero (menus and everything). It's time consuming, but really easy.

Is it possible to burn a dvd that combines photo slideshows and movies? What would you need to create slideshows, and burn slideshows and movies to dvd with menus?

Using a CD-R/RW you would need to create them in a special format, VCD or SVCD (higher quality) in order to play them in a DVD player. Note that not all DVD players will play this format, check the manual. It is usually better to use a CD-R than a -RW, but sometimes it's the other way 'round, even different brand CDs will vary in if they play ... no gurantees until tried.

In order to create the VCD or SVCD format, you need software to convert from the AVI file of the S2, there is a lot of free programs that can do that.
Check http://www.videohelp.com , lots of information there.

You'll likely be disappointed with VCD format quality (similar VHS EP), SVCD may be acceptable.

Using DVDs would be the way to go, again, many programs are available to convert into this format, typically one is supplied with the DVD burner.

A DVD recorder is probably the simplest and maybe fastest way, most of the conversion software takes more or less tweaking ...

Good luck,
J.

PLENTY of software available to convert S2 videos to dvd movie format. It's very easy with something like windvd creator. You drag your clips into the program, choose a menu you like, press convert and/or burn. Simple - you can edit, overlay music, put transitions in if you want as the next step. I use more sophisticated converters and editing/authoring software but that is just personal choice and taste.

Easiest way is to get one of those stand-alone DVD burners that you connect to your TV. Hook the S2 AV out to the RCA input of the DVD burner, record on the DVD, and play the S2, and that's it.

On the computer, an easy way is on the Mac. Drag and drop the movies from iPhoto 5 to iMovie HD, click on iDVD.
