Went to the testing at Silverstone yesterday - had a great day - first time I've seen a F1 car 'live'. It was quite spectacular. Taken with 300d and Canon 75-300 III usm lens. I was very pleased with the lens - took about 180 photos, the only ones I discarded were the ones where I missed the car altogether and got a lovely shot of the grey track (several)!!!!

Best wishes

Tracey.

They are very nice indeed, i love the ferrari because it is a great car, but this year they are with some problems with bridgestone tyres, and the jordan because you caught my portuguese fellow Tiago Monteiro.

sorry about my english

What settings did you use?

i'm going to the USGP in a few weeks. I have a 100-300 F4, and I was planning on going with 300mm, at F4 and ISO 100 and seeing how fast the shutter speed was. If it wasn't 1/1000 I figured on moving up to ISO 200.

Jeff, I have to confess I put it into sports mode and just clicked away - they seemed to move so fast I couldn't worry about setting everything as I needed it - I haven't done any sports pictures before and I didn't want to miss any.

Best wishes

Tracey.

Hi mjls - yes, I love the ferrari too - Rubens was driving yesterday. Should be pretty quick when they sort out the tyres though. The McLaren was outstanding - it just looked so smooth into the corners, much like the ferrari looked last season. My daughter is a Jordan fan - she's been looking through the pictures from yesterday and I've had to print her an A4 size for her wall.

Best wishes,

Tracey

You lucky lady.

Though Silverstone is a very long drag/drive for me, if I knew that such days were open to the public I would seriously consider making the effort.

Please tell me more about these practice days & for future reference about the access availability?

TIA :)

If Silverstone's website is anything to go on, it's quite pricey. Their "Bronze" (ie. most basic, no seats, general walkabout ticket) weekend pass is £95 if bought before Feb 05 rising to £135 for after that date. If you want a seat, then the price is between £149/£189 (price split is before Feb/after Feb) all the way up to £329 - again, for Fri/Sat/Sun. That is for the Friday, Saturday and the Sunday however. They don't seem to be listing prices for individual days - maybe they only did that earlier in the year I don't know. Take a look at http://www.silverstone-circuit.co.uk/booktickets/book_tickets_F1.htm for more info.

I think I can live without coming to watch the practice day(s) for the moment.

Not what I expected at all!!!!!!!

the practice day during the GP weekend. I guess u are refering to the "testing" days.

I'm not in UK, but i'm a great fan of F1. Was at monaco last yr! => for parctice days though! that was great too. just too expensive for the race day.

I am pleased to tell you Box Brownie that testing days are absolutely free!!!

There is no way we could afford for the four of us to attend race days - I'd need to win the lottery to do that :)

There were three days testing this week - June 1, 2 and 3 - you take a chance on the weather and who is out testing - there is no guarantee that you will actually see anything. We were very lucky, there were seven or eight teams out on the track on Thursday and it was great to watch.

If you go to http://www.silverstone-circuit.co.uk and have a look around the site you can order a Silverstone yearbook. That will give you the testing dates - according to the calendar there is more testing in September - 13, 14 and 15, the little book also give you the nice prices for race day!!! plus all other events at Silverstone.

Its worth the trip - we took a picnic and made a day of it.

Best wishes

Tracey.

Good job with the shots...perhaps you can try panning next time to get that intense effect :)

Great shots, I'll be in Montreal next week for the Grand Prix du Canada. Thursday I'll be taking the pit tour. Friday-Sunday, enjoying the race events. Just got my XT a few weeks ago along with my 20mm & 28-105mm lenses. I know the 20 is enough in the pits but I hope the 28-105 is enough while shooting from the stands. My seats are about 15 rows back on the start-finish line.

Go McLaren!

They were all panned - I think probably that the effect is a limitation of the sports mode, I'd have loved to get some 'movement' in there - will practice hard for next time!!

Tracey.

Yeah - I noticed that today (I'm having a bad few weeks for dates!). For some reason I thought the British GP was this weekend - hence me looking at the official ticket prices. I just looked at the calendar for the year http://www.silverstone-circuit.co.uk/racecalendar/default.asp and noticed that the last 3 days were free! Doh.

Thanks for the info though, and confirming that it was a good day.

Thanks

Where's JV though?

Wow, Indy is a lot cheaper!!! $25 for a combo Friday and Saturday pass and a ticket for Sunday will run around $90.

With the reduced practice and qualifying times due to rule changes, I couldn't see paying much more.

Hey, glad to see other USGP fans! "see" you there ;)

I'm worried about bringing the camera at all, worried that a large zoom might not be allowed in. Anyone know for sure what the rules are?

I bought my 300 just after the USGP last year, so this will be my first outing with it. My point-n-shoot was not really up to the task.

You can take any lens. I know because a couple years ago my Dad rented a 600 F4 lens and I had to carry the beast around. It was probably 20-30 pounds.
