What do you carry - off duty, so to speak?

I've been shooting exclusively with my Canon 10D w/ battery grip for 1-2 years now. I just started looking for a Compact camera to toss in the glove box / shirt pocket, etc. I saw (here) good reviews on the Canon G6 as well as other compact cameras, but when I pick them up in the store they just feel like toys. I was considering the Sony P200 till I noticed the lack of manual controls. What I want is the capability and build of a 10D/20D stuffed into a matchbook. Is there a market for a professional level (expensive and worth it) compact camera?

I know there will be a trade off... what do you carry when you don't have your SLR?

Let's make a wish list for the manufacturers too.

bought it bc it uses CF's
Took it on my first holiday in 15years without a slr
it didn't dissappoint me

it is bigger then most on the market nowadays, but still smaller then G5/6 or nikon 8400 etc wich I thought were to big.

shoot!

A walking stick. The handle unscrews and there's this little bottle inside.....

Oh, you mean camera-wise. Sometimes a 1999 Fuji MX600Z 1.5 MP, sometimes a little Nikon Nuvis S APS, occasionally a Ricoh Mirai 3 35mm, or a tiny Chinon Bel Ami 35mm.

I mainly shoot with a 1Ds, but had to buy a G6 for a trip with my boss to Switzerland last month where it would have been unthinkable to carry such huge gear. I only used it for that trip and resold it quickly afterwards as I was very disappointed with the quality of the pictures. I'm sure other P&S are no better.

cameras I know of - the Panasonic FZ15. I have no interest in movies with it so the lack of sound doesn't bother me. It is not a pocket camera but I have carried a small camera case routinely for 50 years. It is light and the performance of the lens/sensor is incredible. If it had a tilt LCD and a remote control it would be a perfect all-the-time camera. I love the "hold down the buttone and get 2 fps until battery or card runs out feature. And that's at max size and quality. I use my 10D very little these days...

However I am no longer a working pro so what could I know...

... and the Sony P200 doesn't? ;)

Get a Konica Minolta A2 while you can still find one, it can probably earn an award for the compact camera that takes itself most seriously.

If you want something more compact but with full controls try the Casio Z750.

like having a mini slr w/o the weight/lens exchange.

18 years as a freelancer,(news, magazine, wedding photography) camera equip. over the years: Practica MLT, Canon A1, Minolta 9xi, 7xi, Dimage Z1(see my Z1 shots at http://www.photobucket.com ALBUM NAME: buckl the COMMUNITY album was done with the Z1, and most of the photos in the album:Other were w/the Z1)

Been trying to locate one for years, have not seen any real prospect of any Mfr coming up with any decent one yet. Ricoh's hinted GR-1 digital might made it but since no information is available on this one, I will reserve my judgement

Sounds like you want the K-M A2.

Sounds liike the Nikon D70.

Times change.

Point and shoots are growing smaller, faster in some terms (shutter lag, AF lag etc) and has smarter features (live histogram, tilt
viewfinder, perfect metering, WYSIWYG etc.) than SLRs.

And for outdoors use for most people the difference is not big.
Saves a lot of weight too.

Makers of PnS cameras seem to take vignetting and CA more seriously than SLR lens manufacturers. And I've never heard of a PnS with front or back focus issue. IN sufficient light, the large Dof makes for great landscapes.

Noise is not very bad at low iso. No PP on this one.

I have a Fz20, but I'd never recommend it if you just wanted a small, compact, pocketable camera. I'd recommend something in the likes of a Canon S70. I don't own it, but I do have an S60 and it performs quite well. I've also heard good things about the Canon SD500 if you want to go super compact.
Capturing the world with: Panasonic Fz20K and Olympus 520 Zoom

Either a Canon Pro 1 or a Fuji E550. The Pro 1 is bulkier so I carry it when I have a fanny pack, daypack or other carrier. The Fuji is pocket size. Both make excellent pictures suitable for 11x14 prints or larger.

This little thing literally does fit your pocket. It has quite a solid feel to it, too. I got one for my daughter (7) and put a neck strap on it... so small, it's really more like a necklace.

My "off-duty" camera isn't quite so small. It's a digital Rebel with the kit lens. Sometimes a 28-105 EF. I applied the custom functions firmware hack as soon as I got in about 18 months ago. Seemed small at the time, but the XT feels considerably smaller in my hands, and considerably more solid, too. I honestly think I could use about three XTs just for shooting weddings. Image quality is great, now has custom functions, not too loud, and pretty fast AF (better than original Rebel and even 10D). Since the buffer was upgraded, it's what I've always wanted... a high quality digital SLR in a very small, solid-feeling package.

But if we're going to dinner, out to bars, etc. we take my wife's S500.

Panasonic FZ10 (+ extra SD storage and external power), hot shoe flash

Why?
o full manual controls
o bright f2.8 glass through full 36-432mm zoom
o Image Stabilization
o Sensible size... Bigger than the P&S, same or smaller than a dSLR
