Pentax M 300* f/4, any opinions

The M* 300 f4 is the same optical make up as the A* 300 f4. The only difference is the A setting for the aperture ring.

I have the A* 300 f4 and it is a superb 300. Super sharp, beautiful colour and contrast and a joy to use. If you can get either the A* or M* you will not be disappointed.
Handheld, ISO 800, 1/800, f4.5.

Handheld, ISO 200, 1/400, f6.3

Any opinions or pics would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jay

Any idea on the value of a 9/10 M*?
It would be only a guess based on the values of the A* 300 f4 on ebay. The last A* 300 went for US$625.00 I think, so an M* would be possibly US$100 less or US$525.00 but this is only a guess! If it is on ebay, then we do not know what madness will prevail when the time comes!
Thanks for the pics Lance.
No problems. The A* 300 is a superb 300 and the M* 300 would be similar.

I saw an M* 300/4 earlier this week as a Buy-It-Now auction on eekbay, price was US$495. Based on that I think Lance's estimate is accurate. :)

It certainly sounds like a great lens. What opinions of using a teleconverter to it? And if so what one?

Personnaly, I would stick with the Pentax TC as it is designed for the Pentax lenses at around this focal length. If I had a Sigma lens, then I would possibly use a Sigma TC and the same goes for Tamron. This is just my opinion.

I have a Pentax 1.4XTC on it's way to me from Eekbay and should get it late next week. I am only going to a 1.4X TC but I may invest in a 2X TC at some stage but I do not want too much image degredation and I think a 1.4X TC is as far as I want to go at this stage. The 300+1.4X TC combo will give a focal length of 420mm @ f5.6 but the crop factor equates to a 640mm focal length at f5.6. I have actually mainly bought it for those times when travelling and i don't want to have to take my F* 300 f4.5 as I can attach it to my much beloved A* 200 f2.8 and get close at 280mm and f4.

Having said that, I did test a Pentax AF 1.7X TC a few weeks ago with the A* 300 f4 and the results were quite good considering that the combined focal length and crop factor due to the APS C sized sensor of the *ist D was close to 775mm!

BTW on the topic of 300mm lenses, I saw a dealer in the city here has two 300mm second hand pentax lenses in stock...
  • 300mm f4.5 ED for $1,100
  • Manual 300mm f4 for $699
Is there only the M* in 300mm f4 manuals, or could this be a difference lens?

Ohh and lance I was wrong on the price of the 16mm Pentax, I thought it was around $1000 it is actually $1650, I think it may sit there for a while LOL

About right according to ebay. This is an AF lens
  • Manual 300mm f4 for $699
Cheaper than ebay if it is an A*300. This is a MF lens

There is the M* 300 and the A* 300 in manual focus.

I think Joel meant a rectilinear lens or maybe the filter selection ring threw him?

Yeah lance is right, I got it confused with the 28mm Shift lens, they are both 3.5, K series, look kind of similar, and the filter ring threw my off.. it is just a standard 15mm rectelinear (K15/3.5) a rare lens but still that price is way over the top...

I thought so, but I'd better ask! :)

A more correct going rate is probably US$600-650 for a good sample, I'd be surprised if they manage to sell it even near those $2500...

Hi every one,

What do you think of this? Only 3 hours and 45 minutes to go. Its Cheap I think.

http://cgi.ebay.nl/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=12877&item=7509930645&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

Its says only send in Europe, but if you the payment is right, a deal is may be possible. It is worth to try and contact the seller

Well I think I have a M 300* 4 on the way for $400US. It is rated a 9+ by the shop that has it on sale. Based on what has been said I took the plunge. Worst case senario I'll resale it on eBay. Wouldn't you all agree that it is a good deal?

Yep, momentary mental lapse on my part ;-)

I honestly don't know how they do business with some of the prices they charge, they had a FA28/2.8 about 5 months back for $499 and they sold it (not mint either, I would have called it 7 or 8 out of 10).... Sucker born every day I guess, and eventually they walk past those stores.... This is why the M*300/4 for AUD$699 was amazing, they 'almost' never have fair prices there.... lol...

Yes you did well, I was sorely tempted to buy the one I saw for AUD$699 but am trying to be good and save for the 70-200/2.8 ;-)
