You are right. They are not often seen out of the water. This one was out on a canal bank for about 15 minutes.

When I was visiting New Orleans, we saw thousands of them smashed on the roadway. I understand that they were brought into the area on purpose by officals who thought they'd eat another non-native pest, in this case a plant that is choking the waterways. I guess they didn't like the plants they were supposed to eat, but they did flourish so now they've got two pest species on their hands. Bummer!

Well you learn something new everyday. It's funny, while I've never seen one of these guys before, it half resembles a beaver and muskrat. Both of which we have in Canada. I'm guessing you're in southern USA, or close to it?
