OK - I told canon (couple of days ago) that there seemed to be a weird noise on the videos shot with the IXUS 700 - this is what they said:

"Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention, this issue is the first of its kind reported to our help desk on this product."

First of it's kind? Maybe all the people here who have this problem with the cameras want to tell canon - they might just do something about it (yeah, I know)

Anyway - can someone without some weird camera bias just tell me - all this purple fringing and blur and video noise and (etc. etc.) - will someone who has never used anything other than a point and click, and hardly uses a camera other than holiday snaps and a few in the pub - will they notice some real horrible problem with the IXUS700? I just want a nice, small camera that takes pictures that are not horribly distorted (or whatever you call it) - I'm not intending to go all professional, just want nice snaps (appologies in advance for saying snaps here, just want to make it clear I am very un-professional) - is the IXUS 700 going to do it? Are all these problems I have read about here stemming from the expectations of super-photographers (who expect a lot more than I will) - or will the average joe in the street think they made a bad decision buying this camera?

To put in perspective, I have an old ixus (actually elph as I got it in oz) film camera - I want a digital replacement - am I going to be horribly dissapointed? I liked everything about that camera, and noticed nothing wrong with the pictures that isn't directly due to me being rubbish...

Thank you!

but you might want to consider an even smaller Elph for your needs. Some of the other SD's are really small and quite good.

My SD500 has the video noise, but audio has never been one of the Elph's fine points (I've had two ealier models before this). I haven't noticed purple fringing (haven't really looked for it though) and for the most part have been happy with the camera. It is an improvement over the last model I had.

In my opinion after owning 7 ELPHs the S230 was the best of them all.

The S230 is my work camera, I take tens of thousands of photos, and piles of video clips per year and it keeps on working great under heavy use.

The SD500 is my play camera, I had a S410 before it, sold it, and bought the SD500. I really like the camera, but one thing I noticed with all the ELPHs, you have to get use to them.

Each one operates a bit different, I call it personality , each camera has its own personality and it takes a while to get use it.

If you are looking for the perfect camera, it doesn’t exist.

Good luck on your choice.

I like mine too...quick little bugger. The video problems really arent much of an issue for me. I think the pix look awesome. I had a sony p-100 and i think it tramples that camera!
