Best way to remove background on pet photo

The only way I have ever done this is using the extract tool and with fur that will be a real doosy. I suggest the same thing on Russell Brown. He might have an easier way of doing this.

Oh more thing is to erase the background and add what you want to it.

Does anyone know of the best way to remove the background from a
pet photo without having too much trouble with the hair/fur?
I have some dog/cat photos that I want to remove the backgound and
am having a terrible time with it.

Thanks for the help,
Denise

I did both of these with Russell Brown's advanced masking. It preserves the fine edge of the hair rather well once you get the hang of it.

I went to your gallery and watched your tribute to your Mother. I couldnt help but shed a tear or two because my mom is also slipping away with the same disease. I go see her everyday and she is more distant than the day before. Would you please tell me how you made the video? I have been wanting to do that as a tribute to her as she is the last of that generation. I give you my sympathy as I know what you are going through. Thanks

Thank you very much for the kind words about the tribute to my Mother. It is a horrible disease. I wanted to make sure my family remembered her how she was instead of what this disease is doing to her.

I used the Mac iLife apps along with Still Life for the pan and zoom. I imported the photos and still life clips into iMovie, added transitions from Slick and then added the music I had in iTunes. I then exported as a QT movie. I also burned them to DVD using iDVD so my family members could watch on their TVs.

I am in the process of re-doing the movie, along with the other ones. I have learned a lot from these forums (especially the Retouching forum) and I want to clean up some of the photos. I bought Photographic Edges and applied some interesting edges to some of the photos that I want to include in the movie. I also have gotten better at syncing the music with specific photos.

You might also look at my Poster page on my website. I made a 13 x 19 poster of my Mother, my parents and my brother who died 2 years ago. I found that is a nice way to remember someone. I used Photoshop and Photographic Edges to do those. I then printed them out and had them lamentated.

I hope this has helped you. Let me know if you need further help.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, your Mother and your family.

Er, no. You posted a link to the complete page of tutorials and it seemed the person was having difficulty in finding the specific Advanced Masking link on that long list. I thought it would save her time by clicking on it myself and pasting it for her.

My Dad is still living but has Alzheimer’s also. Such a cruel disease for the person and their families. You have inspired me and I am going to do a tribute like this for my parents. Thanks for sharing.I will let others more knowlegable answer your original question. I hope you do not mind I booked marked your page to look at again later when my eyes are dry. Darlene

Darlene,

Thank you so much for the kind words about my family tributes. I shed many tears making them and still shed tears when I watch them. I am in the process of improving them with better retouched photos. It seems to be a never-ending process because I always think of ways to make them better or find new photos that I want to add.

Please let me know when you finish your tributes. I would very much like to see it.

Are incapable of browsing a page?

Jesus, we better stop posting links to ATN Central's downloads page too - God forbid someone has to spend 30 seconds scrolling around to find the content in question... and I'm sure it would be a terrible tragedy if the person we're trying to help could actually see the information associated with the content in question as the publisher of said content actually intended, right?

Hi Steve;

I tried to use Russell Brown's video tutorial on removing backgrounds and failed misearably. (as reported in a post elsewhere on this forum.)

I worked on it for two days, 8 to 10 hours a day, (I'm retired) and simply could not get it to work.

Could I request that you e-mail me with some answers to questions I have about that tutorial?

[email protected]

Thank you,

DonaldS

Hi Steve,

It looks to me as though you really understand and use Russell Brown's method of masking by layers.

I need your help and was wondering if you could assist me, a well intentioned but apparatnely rather dim person, through this process?

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1006&message=12946695

I would me most appreciative if you could see you way clear to give me a hint or two.

Thanks,

DonaldS
