380ex flash focal length

I recently purchased a (used) 380ex Canon flash for use on my G2.

I notice that the focal length light on the back of the 380ex stays consistently on the 50 mm setting, blinking red all the while. It makes no difference how the G2's lens is zoomed. How is this supposed to work?

The photos themselves show that the flash is probably filling for a 50mm setting (on a 35mm camera). On full wide angle zoom settings on the G2 the corners are dark. This isn't normal, is it? Otherwise, exposure control seems to working okay.

I also notice that the G2's flash control is not operational when the 380ex is attached. That is, you can't set it for "no flash" "always flash" "red eye flash" etc.

All of the above are true in exposure settings of P, Tv, Av. No difference.

Thanks for your help.

Hi BuckoBob.I did have a G2 and used my 420EX witch is almost the same as the 380EX mine diden't blink it stayed red,and moved when i zoomed in and out.I just tryed the 420EX on my G6 the red light stays on and changes when i zoom.Try making sure the flash head on your 380EX is either centered and isn't at a odd angel.I did have a flash blink
before and i just readjusted the flash head and the blinking stopped.
I dont know why you have dark corners something isn't right.I think

the 380 like the 420 covers a 24mm wide angel lens, the G2 is 34 or 35mm.Hope this helps you out Cheers Bob.

Thanks Bob,

I had checked the head position, and it is full forward. The 50mm light blinks no matter what the head position is. I also checked the seating of the contact on the camera mount, and eveything looks to be okay.

I just wonder if the blinking 50mm light suggests some problem in the zoom head. That would also help explain the dark corners.

Anyone else have this blinking light problem?

Thanks...

Hi Again.I think you just answered your own question.Your right on all points.I would do this just for peace of mind go to your local camera store with your G2.Try a 380Ex or a 420EX like you interseted in buying it.Then you'll see the flash work like it supposed to.If it's just stuck at 50mm maybe a camera tect can fix it for you.And it sounds like it's the flash head that's stuck. That would sure make the edges dark at 34mm
for sure.If you get it fixed let us know Cheers Bob.
