Pbase or Smugmug ??

I have both. I will not be renewing Pbase. I can sell prints at Smugmug.

Pbase has unlimited bandwidth... but I rarely run into that kind of issue. I like Smugmug's interface better. I spent $100 and got the "pro" level. The prints from their print shop in Atlanta (I forget who they use) are great. I think there are cheaper prices, but frankly, I'm passing the print cost on... so I'm not overly picky about it. If I need bulk prints, I go elsewhere.

You can try Pbase for free for a month. Try it. And Smugmug, I think you can get the basic membership for almost nothing. You need to decide for yourself.

Oh... with Smugmug, you pick a username, and that becomes your site.

username.smugmug.com

Or if you own a domain, they'll host it for you. If you were to own photography.com, you can assign your domain to your site on Smugmug, and customize it to your liking, and no one will be the wiser.

Fotki is great. The only advantage smugmug has in my book is support for movies. I got a smugmug account ($100) for my pro stuff, and was very disappointed; it's difficult for my customers to order prints, because it gave them way too many options (like color correction--why would I want my customers to color correct my shots?).

Fotki is unique in having FTP uploading, which makes automating uploads very easy; smugmug has a very small limit on the batch upload size, which makes uploading 100 MB of photos WAY difficult. For as much as I paid for smugmug, I don't have enough bad things to say about them.

When I looked into this 6 months ago, it came down to pbase or smugmug for me. Which you want probably depends upon what you are lookng for. For me, it really came down to two issues:

1) pbase has unlimited bandwidth, but a 200GB file limit. smugmug has unlimited file strorage and a 2GB/mo limit (that is going up shortly to 4GB/mo).

2) smugmug lets your family, friends or customers order prints right from their site. pbase doesn't have that capability.

For me, I was able to figure out that the smugmug bandwidth limit was easy to stay below and I loved the idea of unlimited storage so I could upload all my originals (which makes for good prints if people order prints) and never have to worry about storage limits.

And, I wanted my family and friends and kids sport's team parents to be able to order prints from my site. smugmug can do that, pbase can't.

If you expect a high amount of bandwidth traffic, can fit your images in 200GB and don't need your viewers to be able to order prints, then there are lots of folks here at dpreview that seem happy with pbase and like some of it's other features.

If you sign up for smugmug, make sure you have a discount coupon when signing up as it will save you $5. If you want, you can use my discount coupon "Bhl3oSIF5zVho". You just enter this code when you sign up for the 7-day free tiral and it will save you $5. Let me know if you have any more questions about smugmug.

I'd give a vote for Pbase only because I havent had a single problem that the naysayers talk about. I've always been perfectly able to access my account, I've had 3 broken links... which (duh) are re-generate able with a button... and I dunno, 200 GB is like 1,000 pictures or so... I'm sorry, but if a photographer fills up 1000 shots on an online gallery, perhaps it's time to be a little more selective with what goes up and what stays in storage...but that's just me. I only put up my best stuff and even then some of it is crapola... I paid 60 bucks for something like 600 megs of space. But I can't say anything about smugsmug other than its name is funny...to me smug means snobby... not sure what they're going for or what it means but I'm sure someone will tell me lol... good luck with whatever you choose.

Yes...it's been aggravating at times, but the rest of the time I appreciate the ease of uploading zipped bunches of files, adding and editing captions and gallery descriptions, switching image order.

I find the search function by camera brands and listing of lenses tremendously helpful, enjoying watching my favorites albums and seeing when they've added something new.

I've using many picture storage sites and pBase is the BEST!

I'm hoping that Slug will get out of the student/rebellious child/passive resistent non-communicative mindset and become more professional. He should also get rid of the deadwood that haven't paid for their accounts.

They've been down a grand total of once in the last two months for a few hours. Customer service was very responsive. Plus it works. Decision hasn't been close. Smugmug over pbase by a mile.

Does it have a place where you can record your favorites and see when they're updated?

Can you search by Camera/Lens/Subject???

My biggest complaint about SmugMug is I don't like the way the pages are organized with the thumbnails on the left and larger images on the right and then having to click again to see a larger image. I feel it's very cluttered looking.

Smugmug allows you different presentations. As the site licensee, you can choose one of the presentations (and lock it in) or allow your viewers to set their desired one.

Use this page as an example:

http://yiayia.smugmug.com/gallery/422812

Look at the top bar and choose the various "styles" there to see a page presented in 6 different ways.

I have both a pbase and smugmug account. I use pbase for tests and samples now, since over the years I have stored a lot there. I use smugmug for some gallery presentations or even journals. I use journals a lot when I travel and post pictures to folks back home, explaining a lot of what they are seeing. Most convenient for me is smugmug's print order.

The other convenience of smugmug is that I can set up a lot of private galleries that do not require passwords. All they require is the URL to the gallery.

If you use someones code to sign up then you save $5 on your membership. The person whose code you use gets a $10 credit towards future fees. This is a pretty good deal for both parties.

You can use smugmug for a free trial and not be charged. I did the free trial and within the trial period I upgraded to a pro level account, its that good! Its great because you get unlimited uploads and can set your own pricing levels including what if anything you want to make on prints that people order. For family and friends they can order at cost which is similar to costco. For others, you can further subsidize your membership, your equipment, etc. This is in addition to all the other great features that others have mentioned. Show me another site where you can upload basically unlimited gigs of photos at the pro level. If you upload full sizes files, you can even order backup dvd's and people will always be able to print the best resolution.

I let my pbase site lapse after finding smugmug.

Anyhow, here's what you do:

Highlight this code with you cursor,

9uFSlYTeqNIV6

Right click on the hilighted code and select copy. Do that now. I think you only get one chance to enter the code.

After you read the rest of this posts enter the url http://www . smugmug.com at the top of your browser and sign up. When you are prompted for the code, right click on the place to enter it and select paste.

You will not be charged until the trial period is over, and then it will reflect a five dollar discount. Most people who are visiting your site will be impressed enough to use your code to sign themselves up. My second year is already free (I think it would cost $100) and I'll have no problem continuing that trend. I think this is the only one where you can do this.

The user interface is really intuitive. You don't have to be a computer wiz to upload pics or change the site to your liking.

Have fun.

I will have to investigate SmugMug a bit further. Your hint below was very helpful.

I have had a bit of trouble with pBase's password protection and how it can apply a password to subsequent galleries.
